FYI : this has bugged me for weeks! My fire won't turn down The first thing to be aware of is that some new clean air fires do not shut down like old fires. Old fires used to shut all the way off and the wood would just smolder.

In MOST cases nothing is wrong. Wood stoves with a baffle that directs the hot gases TOWARD the front and toward the glass should not be opened when the fire is burning. They are not meant to be opened. It's not a fireplace. You must prepare the fire properly at the beginning, and then wait until it's just coals to reload. Nothing is wrong.

I noticed air quality improve dramatical when coal burning was banned. At the time I lived in St Albans and would wait for the bus to the city near the corner of Rutland and Mays at approximately 7;00 am Mon.-Fri. In winter, as soon as I was at that stop, I would start getting bronchial problems. Across the road, by the colour and amount of smoke coming from a chimney, helped with the direction of the wind, someone was cold starting a fire on coal, or so it seemed. It was definitely not wood; lungs notice the difference. Irony is, I was also using coal but did not add coal until the wood had sufficient heat/hot embers, that clean combustion was assured. The reason I used coal was that my rental flat was so cold/poorly insulated, in winter only coal had enough oomph to warm the longue and kitchen. That was another substandard standard. Good stuff, about the air. You mention PM10 is a NZS, definitely an irritant, yet it is PM2.5 that is more serious for the lungs and heart, which you did mention is monitored, by why not a NZS? We do not have a good track record in New Zealand with any quality standard if is going require some money to keep it honest, or someone's money making/profit might be slightly affected. Oh well, she'll be right. Or, it'll be right. No other comments yet, hard to believe. I suppose I only get to see my own comments to show me due process is in action. Tui beer, yeah right!

Kia ora, thanks for your question. You’re correct that there’s currently no National Environmental Standard for PM2.5. The National Environmental Standards for Air Quality are under review, and we expect there will be a national standard for PM2.5 in the future. We regulate PM2.5 through the Canterbury Air Regional Plan. For a good overview of air quality in Canterbury, you can read our latest Air Quality Snapshot report www.ecan.govt.nz/data/document-library/?Search=5209714 or find out more on our air quality data webpage. If you see excessive smoke from a chimney, please let us know by calling our Advisory Team on 0800 765 588 (24 hours) or report it via the Snap Send Solve app.

New Zealand is sanctioning Russia and maybe one day China. In Christchurch we buy Chinese buses and also their EV buses. What happens if the US of A makes us stop buying Chinese buses? I just hope we never buy an English bus ever again. I remember the heaps of rubbish the last English buses were, I think called Bristol, maybe the chassis was not English. Auckland bought Mercedes at the same time and what a superior bus in every regard. And don't sell off what not yours to sell off. Thank Christ for His intervention with Aotearoa Water through a protracted court case. Not only that, your collaboration with a particular politician/farmer, instigating commission to take control because he was not happy about enough water, quick enough, for dairy farmers. Hope he's paying to correct high nitrate levels. Lost my trust in your organisation, whatever spin doctoring you spend money on.

Great ambulance at the bottom of the cliff approach. Try addressing where the shit is actually coming from further inland in the catchment. Or does Ngāi Tahu have to much invested interest in Dairy, yeah you know it. Boot some cows off the land instead of people out of their homes would make more sense.

Make sure to increase air intake to stove before opening door; make sure chimney damper is open to allow stove to exhaust smoke; raise the height of your chimney pipe higher above the roof line as this will always improve drafting; make sure chimney has as few elbows as possible and is as vertical as possible; clean chimney as often as needed to remove creosote (especially level 3 "tar"/"glazed" stuff); burn seasoned wood as burning wet wood is wasteful of BTUs and will result in creosote building up incredibly faster. If you burn overnight and damper down the chimney to maintain a long-burning fire, creosote will build up faster as the chimney exhaust temperatures are reduced allowing creosote condensation on the inside chimney surfaces.

Isnt this just a gimmick ? The secondary burn below the firebox instead of above like modern efficient stoves.this fire might look good for a while but with burn rate would not last an hour.

My stove and chimney were brsnd new and this happens. The inside of 'roof' of my woodstove is slanted. Its low in the back and high in the front. Seems the smoke hits the 'roof' and moves toward the door. Even with a sneak attack of opening slowly and getting the flow moving. The ceramic board on the 'roof' has gaps around it and ive tried moving it to see if it would change the direction of the smoke and it doesnt.

Its never been a problem until lefties started using social media. Those lot are always afraid of something. Climate, Pollution, Alpha males, Conservatives etc. 🤦‍♂️🤣

This fire pit is one of a few covered pits that is on the list kzbin.infoUgkxAU9pOCSV9Y5JprooHvfxTpOrt4hx8uRM of approved products for Disney Fort Wilderness. The product served its purpose well and provided excellent fires throughout the evening. We were able to open the door and do s'mores, but I had to be careful because the handle was a bit hot on occasions. Additionally, I wish they had replaced some of the standard nuts with lock nuts in some places. We lost the door handle after just a couple of days of usage. Not a deal breaker, just a recommendation. I still give it 5 stars.

I have the best idea, this solves many problems and the big invasive one too! Firstly we stop producing as much meat and animal products from agriculture and we exclusively start hunting the many Invasive animals for food; We as humans are capable of killing off entire species more than we realize. The Passenger pigeon was one of the most common birds of all the northern hemisphere in North America with an estimated 3 billion strong, then during the 19th century they were killed off by the millions, and now are Extinct. We can really make serious change, we just need to give a reason.

Very simply could be windy outside. Creates air pressure blowing down your flue pushing smoke into house. Before u have enough heat to create a draft to pull smoke up, it doesn’t take much wind pressure to push it downward. It’s common….

That lake looks like it's just about at sea level, I mean just before the end of the video, that digging machine went down pretty deep into the newly dug channel...So by the looks of that project, the incoming tide will backflow into the lake gradually increasing salinity and before you know it lake Ellesmere, is no longer a lake, because they have turned it into a salt water estuary.

Hello. I am looking at a Woodsman Brunner. It looks like it could be difficult to empty because of the upright pieces of steel at the base of the box? Is there a way of cleaning it out ? Ie with a brush and shovel which cannot get in between the steel uprights?

Is it a new problem or one you have always experienced? If it's something that just started it is likely a dirty chimney or chimney cap. If it has always done it, it could be an inadequate chimney for the stove. Chimneys should ideally go straight up from the stove without bends. Exterior part of the chimney should be double walled and should top out at least three feet above nearby obstacles (such as the high point of the roof). Finally, when opening the stove to add wood, whenever possible wait until it has burned down to a bed of hot coals. Then, open the flue 100% and turn the thermostat to maximum. Unlatch, but do not open the door. Wait until the coals are burning brightly, or there is a good flame (if you have to open it before it has burned down to coals.....not recommended, but sometimes unavoidable because you are going to bed or leaving and don't want the fire to go out while you sleep or are gone). Then, and only then, slowly open the door. This process allows the flue to warm up which increases draft prior to fully opening the door.

what are we doing to combat this? surely you should take them out of the water to dry so they arent in the water ways this is a common occurence here and we should do something to atleast remove it, and possibly even prevent it, i highly suspect this is related to the farms next to the water but you arent allowed to say that
