What I think about now.. is that even if game/graphics evolution stopped after 8 bit.. It wouldn't be such a big loss cause the number of great games released back then is staggering and there's always something new to discover and play

Always loved to visit your website to discover games, great to see you're now doing yt content as well! Small correction: lufia 2 does not have any random battles in dungeons (you can see all the enemies on screen and potentially avoid them by careful movement and/or using your items) which imo makes it one of jrpgs of the time that aged best

Oh that's unfortunate, seems I just padded out that entry when I recorded the narration from the script and it caused it to become inaccurate. I guess there's probably going to be a lot of errors in these vids when all is said and done. :(

I've always loved first Sonic Adventure and I've tried to love SA2 but to no avail. I've started it more than several times and always end up playing at some stupid Knuckles stage where you have to look for emeralds. Also didn't like stupid Tails shooting stages. I wish I could play Sonic stages only like in 1st one. Oh well, looks like most people love this game

After installing RetroArch on a 15 year old computer that someone threw away I have to say I'm totally impressed with Dreamcast games. I never played Dreamcast before this and I do like PS2 and Xbox but Dreamcast games are totally underrated. Sega couldn't keep up to the demand and competition of PS2 but I now think Dreamcast is by far my favorite 6th generation console. Thanks for the great video.

Blaster Master's definitely on there somewhere, I remember compiling the footage. Battle of Olympus ended up in the honourable mentions video, I cut it from the list very late as I needed to make space and felt like I had a lot of action-adventure games on the list already.

Does anyone know why Capcom went so hard on the Dreamcast? Like seriously, without them, they’d have about half the “must play” titles on the console.
@RetroSanctuaryАй бұрын
Sony of America's policy on 2D gaming was causing them a lot of trouble at the time, 2D games were still a major part of Capcom's output so a Playstation monopoly could feasibly be dangerous to their company. Essentially I think Capcom wanted a healthy Playstation competitor so they would have an escape route if things got worse for them. After the Dreamcast failed they tried to throw their support behind GameCube with the "Capcom 5" debacle, but this didn't work out either. In the end the PS2 didn't turn out to be an issue for them anyway.
@leeartlee915Ай бұрын
@ Huh, interesting. Though I thought the thing with “the Capcom 5” had mainly to do with Shinji Mikami having “issues” with Sony. Maybe I have that wrong but that’s what I recall. But the thing you said is helpful. THanks.

My top 100 would probably have about 80 different titles to this partly because I often enjoyed the simpler games more. I loved the darts game '180' and Firebird's 'Stock Car' plus I enjoyed arcade ports of Space Invaders, Galaxians and Time Pilot. Even though it was a bit ropey compared to the Atari 8 bit version I enjoyed Rescue on Fractalus. Another game I loved was Activision's 'Hero'. I probably spent more time playing Elite though than all the other games put together. Which reminds me I also loved Starstrike 2 despite chugging a bit and Starglider although I'm not sure if there was a 48k version of Starglider. I remember playing the 128k version but not sure about 48k. There was a couple Battlezone games I enjoyed and also Star Raiders II I think. Different people different favourite games.

I watched this through getting more annoyed my fav speccy game wasnt there and there it was number 1 I sunk so many hours into Elite and Lords of Midnight. Also Rare were amazing all their games were good. Why did you miss off Sabre Wolf? It was much lauded but i found it too hard for me as a kid.
@RetroSanctuary2 ай бұрын
I felt that while Sabrewulf had prettier graphics than its predecessor, Atic Atac, the game play was noticeably weaker. Given that it came out later I felt that as such it didn't deserve to be on the list. Also IIRC Atic Atac was a budget game, while Sabrewulf was full price, which just makes the comparison even worse.

What's up with the colors on Spectrum anyway? It looks like the games are actually in black and white but then they are colored on the second pass.
@RetroSanctuary2 ай бұрын
I think that's pretty much it to be honest. Its like the graphics are monochrome and then a colour overlay is added over the top of it with 2 colours per 8x8 pixel square. This is the saving grace of the Spectrum hardware as it means the screen memory is only ~6k. There's no hardware support for scrolling or sprites, but because the graphics data is only 6k and the CPU was good for the time and has direct access to this screen memory, the CPU can just move all the pixels around in real time. Without the trick I think the screen memory would be like 16k, the CPU would struggle to manipulate that much data.

This video was good I'm sure this gentleman put a lot of effort in time and it really means a lot especially for those who grew up playing these games, no I truly respect your list and to really good one it's just I disagree that Zelda to the link to the past is number one but I do think that's probably the best Zelda game and final fantasy 6 is considered the best final fantasy game, Even though it could be a toss up between final fantasy 6 or final fantasy VII, but in my opinion the greatest super Nintendo game ever is Chrono trigger because it's still talked about after 20 years and it's not considered just the greatest super Nintendo game ever but consider the best game ever made it's in that conversation,

Programming for it is like a video game. Easy to get going, hard to master. The limitations are intense. Four sprites per scan line (and not much else but sprites for graphics), 37 bytes of RAM. The Atari 2600 just eats it for lunch. CPU speed, graphics and sound. Getting the VC4000 to do anything interesting is a challenge. And then there's the 2600s huge games library and vast homebrew scene. Whereas on the VC4000, I'm the homebrew scene... and I haven't released anything new in the past 4 years! I'm currently trying to port Berzerk to the system, but boy does it fight me. Doesn't help that the emulator is very nearly useless for debugging as it behaves quite different than the real hardware. Debugging with a logic analyzer isn't much fun... Btw. the very first revision of the VC4000 could only display 8 colours. It also wouldn't display cyan, it came out turquoise which looks very nearly green. Also its red looks like the colour the Commodore 64 thinks is red. The Grundig Super Play Computer 4000 (which required a special TV to play...) could also just display 8 colours. But at least in RGB instead of RF. You can easily hack a SCART input into these TVs. (you can also hack the 1st revision and the Grundig version to output those 15 colours the later revisions do, but it's a bit trickier than adding composite video out)

Are the background all just interrupts then?
@senilyDeluxe3 ай бұрын
@@RetroSanctuary Those weird grid lines aren't, that's a feature of the video chip, it's in the datasheet (and the data for the grid can be read back so if you don't use the grid, you can use it as extra RAM). But if the background color changes, that's an interrupt. Also if there are more than 8 sprites on the screen, or more than 4 sprites that look different, there's either an interrupt (or rather several) going on - or good old busy waiting (as opposed to the datasheet, the video chip only fires an interrupt on sprite #0). Example: The car racing game. The computer cars. The x-coordinate of every opponent car must be changed after the car has been drawn on screen, otherwise they will be all in one neat line. That's done with busy waiting as the cars on one of the player don't fire an interrupt on completion. On the night driver game, the pylons have to be spaced more and more apart. That's (probably) an interrupt. (and they missed the opportunity to increment the vertical spacing as well - that would have introduced 3D perspective as opposed to driving up a zipper)
