We are now fast approaching the ability to actually enable humans to erase memories. We can do it in mice (and implant false ones, too), but the method used is not acceptable forus. However, neuroscience is advancing so quickly that memory-erasing technology will probably be available in certain clinics in the next decade. It could be a godsend for people with PTSD. People like to say, "Our memories make us who are, and learning from them makes us better people", but...in the case of PTSD, whether through war, assault etc. don't teach us anything and don't make us any better people - in fact, PTSD does the opposite. And are our memories _really_ what make us who were are? I would think that being conscious itself is the defining characteristic of being human. What else could it be? Peope with dementia or Alzheimer's, or amnesia, are they 'less of a person' because they can't remember things? I see what the argument is intended to convey, but it doesn't stand up to scrutiny. And we're going to have to deal seriously with the questions of memory and personhood over the next few decades, as the cost of Alzheimer's and dementia is expected to increase by 5x (yes, FIVE TIMES) by 2050 in the USA, as the Boomers hit their 80s and 90s in a giant wave.

I’ve been trying to understand why the cinematic elements of this movie resonate with me so much. You’re the first analysis I’ve seen to point out the new wave influence and it was like scratching an itch I’ve had for 20 years! Appreciate the solid analysis of one of my favorite movies 🙏

This is a very different movie after experiencing a BPD relationship. But just as great 😢

This movie is really devastating to me, and it points out the shortcomings of trying to avoid pain at all costs. Instead of learning from their relationship which clearly became very toxic they take the easy way out by deleting their memories, and then they literally repeat their same toxic pattern instead of trusting themselves to do the work to change and become better. I think Clem and Joel both need therapy, it’s sad that they don’t trust themselves to endure hard things and grow from them.

I am someone who had experienced abuse, bullying and self disappointment throughout my life but I have never been hurt worse than during the time when I had to break up with a girl that I couldn’t handle while she was begging me to stay. I thought that I recovered, I convinced myself that I am good now, but when I watched this movie it all turned on me and overwhelmed. I can’t say that it’s the best movie, I can’t even say I liked it, however if you just enjoy the price of torture from inside, which I don’t by the way, you gotta watch that movie.

The intro song is super catchy! The narration throughout this video was really solid and the song that started in the background of the “life” film was amazing. Looking forward to more videos! Two scary films I watched during October that gave me the heebi jeebies were “Deliver us from Evil” and “6 Souls”!

One of the best screenplays ever, Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet have INSANE amounts of chemistry, and the directing style perfectly highlighted the sci fi elements throughout the story while never taking away from the romance. What an interesting dynamic as well, and it’s my relationship so I heavily relate. The outgoing individual is naturally attracted to a quiet reserved individual because they both balance each other out and fill each others voids. He wants to be more confident and actually LIVE life, and she wants someone to slow her down and truly understand/love her. The reason this film is perfect is because it does not hold back, it forces the viewer to watch the harsh reality of a dynamic like this. The love is like no other but the fighting can be very destructive because of the opposite personalities. The pain can also be unbearable because of the tremendous amount of dependency they have for each other to keep those voids filled. Just a masterpiece

Everyone butchers the French language, it's forgivable. Butchering French cinema by censoring the tits, intolerable. It's like covering the Venus de Milo with a table cloth.

I don’t think a literally endless loop is in question…for several reasons. But I think that the ending point is trying to convey that love conquers all. Making the effort to try again and again despite the heartache and discord. The moments are worth it. Our memories positive and negative allow us to keep growing. The complexities of this story and concept in general are immense but these are my current thoughts about the ending.
