It is just that the constant attempts to highlight the Arabic roots of Spanish would seem to ignore an undeniable fact: Spanish is basically evolved Latin, and word origins surpassing in percentage those from Arabic are Greek loans and those from other languages. We also have 3% of germanic words. This matches closely our genetics. Everybody highlights the Arab component, but very few people talk about how we are largely Western European in origin and culturally. I'm not refuting your video nor wish to deny the obvious Northern Africa imprint on us, but it seems that it is the only think others see, as if there were an agenda to "exoticize" us more than it is due. I wish I could see more videos talking about the surprising number of English and Spanish cognates through Latin (60% of English lexicon is of Latin origin after all, if we include French words). That would be more didactic when it comes to learning and understanding Spanish and more representative of our reality. Fewer people are aware of it, as everybody keeps talking about Arab culture and Flamenco, which is a reductionist view of Spain as a whole, or of the essence of my country for that matter. It is not only your video: we are bombarded by them. Sorry to be so critical.

@carlosaradas5926 no worries! Regardless, the video is about arabic words in Spanish. Not English. So while you are true in what you say, we aren't talking about the same thing. Because the words in Spanish don't come from French, but Latin, and has had huge arabic influence (and lesser so Greek), but not French directly.

@@anthonymullislangcoach French is ultimately another variant of evolved Latin, like the rest of romance languages, so Latin it is however indirectly. If a lot of English lexicon is easy for us and we have a tendency to use Latinate words when speaking it ("postpone" rather than "put off", or "testify" rather than "bear witness", just to give you two) it is because we recognise those words from their cognates in our own language. I teach Spanish to foreigners, many of them English speakers, and they are sadly unaware of the many connections until they are brought to their attention, hence the suggestion in my comment. I was thinking aloud about what ideally should be the case with KZbin contents. But you are right, we are talking about different things. After all, what difference does one more video on the same topic make? You are fully entitled to talk about what calls your attention and cannot be expected to give the whole picture if that is not your desired focus. Saludos.

⁠@@anthonymullislangcoach I’m from the Lower Rio Grande Valley of south Texas (U.S.) and we have always used the word Gis there, and I have family in northern Mexico (Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, Coahuila, San Luis Potosi) and have heard it used by them as well, I had never heard anyone to this day use the word Tiza for chalk, and still haven’t like I didn’t even know that word existed for chalk in Spanish till now, very interesting 🤔

The Cubans are awesome, but good lord are they tough to understand. Gabriel Iglesias does a skit on this, about the different types of Spanish. Check it out!

@@anthonymullislangcoach my family is mostly from Zacatecas and Mexico State and they only use gis from what I heard. I read up on the subject before and I read they say chalk is gis and tiza is mostly used to refer to the chalk used in billiards. I googled gis and I found a lot of pictures of Crayola gises and other brands. I also found on wiktionary that gis comes from gypsum.

I mean yes, you are correct. I mean, both refer to the same group, but they called themselves Mexica, so would have been more astute on that point.

I think that one is going to be a struggle. I dont foresure Arizona or New Mexico in the States giving official status to Navajo either. Not enough support for the idea.

no Mexican is pushing for this because this would end up erasing other indigenous languages in the country and I doubt indigenous who speak other language would be okay with this since it would give Nahuatl a more important role which shouldnt be, all indigenous languages are important

​​@@Achikatzin1519 it does imply the superiority of Nahuatl. No other indiginous group would accept learning it as the lingua france of the country. The lesser of all "evils" (least discomforting) is to keep speaking Spanish, as it is already accepted to be the language people speak in the country. This is besides how hard it would be make people change language in a country where 100M already and only speak Spanish from birth.
