I spent 9 years of my youth navigating by this LORAN-C tower. It is sad to see it go but technology marches on and GPS is much more accurate. Like the boats I served on this tower will be Razor Blades soon.

The question is not that GPS is simpler, cheaper and more accurate. it is that it is a single point of failure of all civilization. Even transoceanic commercial planes are pushes to remove laser ring gyroscopes, they are expensive and need maintenance: yes no inertial navigation (yeah we have GPS). In case of a failure of interference on GPS (that is being made by Russians right now) the plane will get completely blind in the middle of the ocean. We depend too much in too little. Navy offices do not have star navigation classes anymore: lets depend completely in four satellite constellations (2 of which can not be trusted) and pray for a Kessler syndrome never happening.

We made regular radio checks with the other stations in the North Sea Chain; Jan Mayen, Bø and Sandur. @@fl_ks4148 Looks like my reply was deleted. All Transmitter masts in the North Sea chain were 625FT masts. There were 411Metre masts at a few stations in other parts of the world.
