1 2& &4& 3rd beat is syncopated...not strummed but felt. Down and Up is not rythum.. rythum is time. And time is counted.

Thanks for the PDF download of the sheet music and tab Anthony. Really helpful. However, the notation is apparently a little off. I went over the song with my guitar teacher and he explained that the initial B5 is actually a "pick up beat" that is a lead in on the 7th beat of the un-notated preceding bar. Thus the 1st beat of the bar falls on the C#5. And I thought the strumming pattern for the C#5 was a triplet while you have it notated it as a quaver a crotchet then another quaver. When you slow the track right down you can clearly hear the strumming pattern is actually 2 tied quavers - a syncopation, counted as 1& (2) &. Its then followed by a tied quaver on the E then 4 crotchet beats for the C5 A C5 B making up the 7/4 Also, the intro repeats 3 X at 7/4 with the 4th repeat at 6/4 timing which leads into the B chord for the verse thus replacing the pick up beat right at the beginning of the intro which was also a B chord. Hope I've detailed all that correctly. Happy to be corrected if you disagree.

Thanks for your feedback. Its great to see someone taking such an interest in video and transcription I created. The main 7/4 riff is written with B5 on beat 1 as when the drums finally play a backbeat over it at 3:20 the kick falls on the B5 and the snare on the C#5 making the B5 beat 1 in my bar. However you can count it differently as the beginning cowbell and later handclaps have no drum backbeat dictating where is 1 in the bar. For me its just easier to see it as a bar of 7 from the first chord. Your interpretation with a pickup to 3 x 7/4 with a 6/4 works too. If the C#5 was a triplet it would have stretchier "reggae" time feel. In general its a very straight guitar riff rhythmically. The first pair of the 8th E chords lineup with the cowbell on beat 4 (or 3 if you make C#5 beat 1). No need for a tie there. I hope this makes sense. Midnight Oil is more complicated than it seems!

I've been playing professionally for 45 years now and whenever some wanker starts talking in ones, fours and fives, I just kindly ask him, what are the keys? Because there is no "key of one". I'm also blessed with a good ear which allows me to completely disregard this nonsense.

BRO!!! This is the best lesson! I can’t believe I’m just now seeing this! The Black Crowes are my favorite of all time…I’ve seen them over 40 times! I’m subscribing to your channel! If by chance, you take requests, could you please to a lesson on Rich Robinson’s song called “Music That Will Lift Me” Amos Lee’s song “El Camino” Bob Dylan’s “ Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You”….which the Black Crowes cover beautifully! Thank you so much in advance if you decide to teach any (or all) of these songs! Now, I’ve got to pick up my guitar and practice “Soul Singing!”😊

your playing is great ... for me too much talking through this , i just want to hear the notes and remember them , when you talk it breaks the concentration .. i dont think blackmoore cared if his notes were dorian or anything else , he just made it sound nice ... you have the ability to play thedse solos and songs extreemly well , but for me i love lessons with minimal talking , let your fingers ta;lk brother .. keep up the good work though ...

To maybe give some feedback, you go from a pentatonic shape to a diatonic shape. Maybe it would be good to see the pentatonic shape beside it as well.

Thanks, it’s the best transcription of the live version on the net. I was looking for the G shape chord and I had it wrong when I played it, but your G sus 4 is spot on and sounds like what Thom played. I am going to see him play in October in Melbourne and I hope he plays this song. Thanks for sharing !!

Thanks and greetings. Saw a screenshot of one of the pages from Book 2 on Amazon India (which is where I am) and it had a page on the Major Scale, making me wonder if Book 1 would be too basic for someone who does play a bit (albeit without direction). Is that the case? I am looking for a complete step by step book at the end of which (hopefully) most of my knowledge gaps would be plugged. This does seem good for that.
