Hi Dr Ganguli i have a background in Electronics and I am currently Working as AI Engg - And I wanna combine both these domains in Robotics and AI like humanoids, robotics arms, drones by pursuing Masters in US - But I also Wanna work on really cutting edge fields Like Nuclear propulsion, jet engines, rocket engines I am really confused - Should I Do MS in Robotics-AI and Then PHD in Nuclear propulsion ? - IF I Take Drones as my masters Thesis than would I be considered for Nuclear propulsion as PHD candidate I really would like to build Lockheed CL-1201 - How do I go about this ?
@Drganguli7 сағат бұрын
Well nuclear propulsion is a capital intensive field and needs backing of government in some way. You may be better off focusing on drones for your masters degree. About the Lockheed plane it was never made as the requirements from the customers change with time. Today small and cheap drones are more promising as they represent distributed concepts. But some governments with lot of money may fund a nuclear powered plane

I have enjoyed your content so far but I think your advice on DEI reveals your purpose with these videos. And, that is not to inspire students and make them think critically but rather to be a coach of sorts for academic success. No matter what you have to say, Sir, DEI statement is not just another hack that you have to know how to play with and according to the politics of the times. DEI is the reason why many of the international students get to study in foreign universities and DEI is a strength to uphold and not a checkbox to tick, either with a red ink (republican) or blue (democrat). Also, it is important for the physical sciences as well as the social sciences since all knowledge must essentially serve societal needs. Physical sciences must be as diverse, inclusive and have as equitable representation as the Social Sciences. Identifying DEI to be of relevance largely to the social sciences is an extremely problematic thinking and is a sign of reductionism. I think it would be better if you were to step aside from this role of a PhD success coach cum KZbinr and step onto the role of a genuine teacher. I think you will realize where you went wrong with this one.
@Drganguli17 сағат бұрын
Yes you are right in that I am giving apolitical advice here. But i am sensitising people to the facts of real life which they have to deal with.
@sayanrouble17 сағат бұрын
Being apolitical is a political choice too! When you are trying to be apolitical with your DEI statement and writing it to fit the mandate of the institution, you are essentially ceding your role as a teacher. You are strengthening the power hierarchies that are dictating the terms to you - which is to not take a stand in favour of DEI. So, your apolitical stance is political too ! Now, if you don't have the spine to take a stand for the same DEI that allows you to get to where you are, how can you end up being a good "professor" of knowledge - a teacher ? That's the problem with this line of thinking - a ready formula to crack the application process. And, that is why I am requesting you to think about it as a teacher and not as a grad success coach.
@Drganguli7 сағат бұрын
@ ok if you would like to be an activist then you should take a position in your statements. That is your prerogative in all cases. Anyway diversity statements are in their way out in most universities as many colleges find them to be not genuine.

Thanks for making this video, but as someone who started his career as an Assistant Teaching Professor and now is an Associate Teaching Professor, times are changing rapidly, even teaching positions are getting competitive, in my university which is one of the top public universities in the US we are requiring our Teaching Professor candidates to pick an advanced topic (preferably from third or final year courses) for their teaching demo. Like you mentioned, we pay close attention to how the candidates interact with the students during their teaching demo. After that there is a very long technical questionnaire which aims to test the technical knowledge of the candidates. We now also give a slight edge to candidates who have publications in ASEE or IEEE Transactions on Education.

Great video. I started learning Fortran back in the days of FORTRAN IV, did a bit in Fortran 77, but really got back into Fortran programming when free-format came into the standard. I predominantly use Silverfrost FTN95 which comes with a free compiler with a fully integrated IDE development environment. Today I mainly write code for personal interest rather than any specific task. In ternns of learning programming, I find Fortran very easy to understand and develop; all the tools are there to build from small to large programs. Apart from anything else, Fortran is a good way to learn sound programming style and the need to comment your code so anyone can follow it. Enjoy Fortran! It is still a great language to learn, just start slow and steady and not rush ahead.

If you do not get a TT position, then apply for NTT positions, they aren't so bad. I am a NTT Associate Teaching Professor in the US in a public university. I will be eligible for a Full Teaching Professor position in a few years. My job is very stable and I get all the retirement benefits. It's true that we aren't generally respected by the TT/T faculty and aren't included in important department meetings but I have stopped caring. I teach my classes and go home. I do not have any useless publication or grant money stress, lol. My salary is only a little less than TT/T faculty. Many of my peers left the US because they couldn't land a TT position in the US after their PhD/Postdoc.
