Awesome agaves Joe!!! I have a couple of titanota agaves. The species, which is a large plant. Love those unique twisted teeth!! And I have the cultivar titanota " lions mane" I really like the lions mane as it is much smaller with more numerous smaller " titanota " teeth. I also have a parryi that I've had over 40 years. This agave is tough as nails!!! During the summer I just set it outside and don't do much of anything to it. Takes care of it's self. Started as a single plant back in California, then doubled about 15 years ago. I like agaves cause I can store them under benches and taller plants. I have an agave much like the last large one . A cultivar called " Rastaman". Also have 3 manganese. Great tough plants!!! I would love to have the first species you unboxed!!! Thosecare beautiful when they get larger with the tufts of fuzz on the leaf tips. Very nice selection Joe!! Thanks for sharing your new great agaves!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Bavaria, Germany 🇩🇪 have a wonderful weekend ahead!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🌿🌻🌷🌾🌸🪴🌴🌱🍀💐🌳🌹🏜😃👍

You are absolutely right saying that there are so many beautiful succulent plants alongside cacti. As for myself, I enjoy growing Sansevieria for example. And given the fact that many Pelargonium plants are also adapted to arid conditions, I would also mention them in this context of succulent plants I like to grow. You really picked some wonderful Agave species, the Agave striata reminded me a bit of Sansevieria cylindrica. One short question that came to my mind is: How old are Agaves this size approximately? Maybe 2-3 years? Wishing you a relaxed weekend! :)

Whoops, suddenly there was a nice Cactus Joe video. What a beautiful surprise. I am very envious of the first one you unwrapped. I saw it as a large plant, when I was with the Nordic Cactus Society in the Netherlands this summer. Certainly a beautiful plant when it has the white tufts at the tips of the leaves. Thanks for the video.

Haha, thanks Palle, indeed no early warnings issued ahead of this video, and glad to hear at least it was still a pleasant surprise, lol! Yeah, I must say I have been looking for a halfway affordable Agave albopilosa for a long time, it's not easy to find and they are never cheap. But I decided to finally take the plunge this time. Btw Uhlig has it currently, and with a 25% discount just this black friday weekend, just in case you were interested. That's a brilliant and very comprehensive video Joe! About a year ago I bought a number of Agave seeds as these are such beautiful plants. Success was mixed but I do now have a good number of baby agave plants, mostly species chosen for their small size or cold tolerance. Agave Americana grows well outside here, and this morning I was closely admiring a small wild colony growing on a very sheltered south-facing limestone cliff. They may all be offsets from an original plant but the sheer size of each plant is awe-inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing this video. 😀🌵💚

Nice video Joe! Here in Italy you can find the Americana almost everywhere, easily on the rocks in front of the sea, and often in the gardens in its variegated form. I have a little collection with the americana variegata and the wild blue form, of course, and also Parryi, filifera schidigera, shaka zulu, toumeyana bella, potatorum shoji raijin, victoria reginae, lophanta quadricolor, attenuata. This last one, the swan neck agave, is a bit of an outsider in the group, being velvet leafed, pleasant to touch, and can get quite relevant dimensions, but it is so lovely... An absolute stunner which gives a tropical aspect to any garden. Guess what? I love agaves a lot! By the way, I would appreciate a similar video on the aloe genus, which I also love and grow. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Thank you Joe ~ a very helpful and informative video. You have a stunningly beautiful collection of Agaves! I leave a quite large Agave americana variegata in its pot in the garden over Winter here in London, as it's too big for indoors or my mini greenhouse. It survives with the loss of a few 'leaves' (which can freeze solid!), but recovers again in the Spring. The only thing I would add is keep the really sharp larger specimens out of reach of family pets. Great video :) .

Thanks so much Joanna, for watching and also your wonderful comments, as always much appreciated! Very happy that you found the video informative, thank you. Yes you are absolutely correct to point out that one really needs to watch out for our pets ( ...and young children!) when growing some of the Agave with super pointy and hard leaves, a real hazard! Your A. americana sounds fantastic and what an amazing way of growing such a beautiful plant outside in London! I wish I could do that too, haha, but our winters unfortunately just get way too cold here in Bavaria, southern Germany. But I think I will try growing a few supposedly super frost hardy ones outside under a roof next year. Sending very best plant greetings across the channel to London, England! Thanks for this very interesting and informative video! It really is fascinating with which ways nature came up with when it comes to propagating and ensuring the forth-living of the plants. I do not have plants of this genus in my collection (yet) but we in fact use them in some of the ornamental beds in Wilhelmshöhe as "center parts". What we also cultivate in our nursery are the well-known Euphorbia pulcherrimas (Poinsettias). They are displayed in the warm house compartment of the Schaugewächshaus and we have in fact some specimens that have already reached a considerable size and age. To be honest, it is pretty sad that most people just throw them away after the flowering period without even trying to cultivate them perennially. I have recently taken a young specimen home from our nursery and will of course try to cultivate it further after its flowering by giving it a kind of dormancy period in Spring without watering and then repotting it und pruning it back. By the way: Congratulations for surpassing the milestone of 4000 subscribers, well deserved! :)

Hi Jacob, excellent to read your wonderful comments and updates, always so nice to hear back from you! Glad you found the video informative and interesting! Haha, I had to chuckle when I read your comments about E. pulcherima - you are completely correct with your observations, 99% of them are simply thrown away, unfortunately. So it's brilliant to read about you growing them after their blooms. Indeed, they can be "reset" again for the following season, triggered by less light and cooler temperatures. That's how the horticulturalists do it too. Thanks again for all your interesting and kind comments and wishing you a wonderful Saturday evening and relaxing Sunday! 🙏☺️👍🙌🪴🪴🪴💚☀️🙋♂️

Great video Joe!!! Boy, i wish i could do that to my roof!!! That would help Greatly!!! Our storms during the winter I'm afraid would tear it all off. Doing it from the inside would be difficult. You have a much better roof than I do on my greenhouse. I did put in a back up propane ventless heater to help with the coldest parts of winter, like when we get a polar vortex and drop to - 3°F. This time I shouldn't have to shuttle plants into the house. Also a fan above it to push the heat down and forward towards the floor We will get down to 30°F at night by Thursday. Here we go Joe!!! Thanks for sharing!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Bavaria, Germany 🇩🇪 have a wonderful!!! Day!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🌿🪴🌻🌷🌹🌾🌸🌴🌱🍀💐🌳🏜😃👍

Thanks so much, Clyde, really appreciated! Yeah, I have been experimenting quite a lot with the insulation on my roof - it is not very easy to attach it properly from the inside, so after a few years of that approach, I have now tried attaching the bubblewrap to the outside. However, I hope the winter storms we get here too, don't tear it all off again, haha! Something I have succesfully done to secure bubblewrap insulation to the roof of my conservatory is to wrap/pull a soccer goal netting over it and then secure it to the ground with camping tent pins. I may have to do that with the greenhouse bubblewrap too, as the storms come in for the winter. Wow, your polar vortex weather would really frighten me, having -3F is truly scary! I hope that you do not get that extremely cold weather this winter again in the Ozarks! I keep my fingers crossed and wish you mild winter weather for as long as possible, my friend! Best wishes and greetings to you at Morris Park in the Ozarks, USA!

Thanks for the overview of your winter dormancy conditions! Could you share an advice: For my cacti that I keep in my studio flat (~16C, mammilaria, gymnos, rebutias) should I put an artificial light? Regular plant lamps with timer. If yes, which time schedule? (12h, 8h, 4h options available)
@cactusjoe8 күн бұрын
Hi Vlad, you're welcome, thanks for watching and commenting! Regarding your question: without knowing your exact setup, I would say it depends very much on whether your plants are standing by a window or not - and which direction that window is facing (northwards is worst if you are located on the northern hemisphere, as there is usually insufficient light - may I ask, where are you based?). Between 4-8h should be fine. If they are near a southward (or, second best options: E/W) facing window they should be fine without additional lighting in winter. Our cacti do not photosynthesize during the winter dormancy anyway. Hope this helps, good luck and happy dormancy!
