Which video of yours do you recommend for working in hdr in affinity photo? I know in DaVinci resolve, I have my images come in as linear raw, then I adjust exposure, then switch to log, do other modifications, then switch it back to linear gamma. I'm not sure how to do a similar type of workflow in affinity. Thanks!

What did you use to create your calibrated light frames? How do you stack mono data shot over several nights with each channel with their own flats?

I'm using this video to learn and understand V18 of Jame's macros. Some macros in this video are no longer used in V18 and there are some new macros not mentioned in this video. I'm new to Affinity with very little experience in image editing . It would be nice to have some updated videos. Learning these macros isn't that cut and dry. I'm finding I need to find other Affinity videos from other content providers to explain basic features, like masking, levels , curves etc that help me understand the macros. I'm trying to figure out what macro to use and when in the workflow and when to stop working on the image. My only other processing experience is with Siril. I'm just using a OSC. Some of the macros are for mono. I can use the Extract OSC Layer to Mono RDB macro and maybe learn some of this other macros. I don't know what the acquisition of Affinity by Canva means for the astrophotography feature for Affinity. I hope Jame can come back and resume making astrophotography content.

Hi there, I have recently purchased Affinity and am trying to download the Macros, I'm completely computer illiterate 😢 can you provide a link, those that I selected don't seem to work as you described by dragging it onto Affinity, it says it's done but don't see a library in the window drop-down. Thanks for your help

After a catastrophic visit to a computer shop for a memory/hard drive upgrade resulting in a major "program" data loss, I ended up considering a different approach from Photoshop and perhaps a package that leant itself more towards astrophotography. At this point, "Google was my friend", I found your macros, watched your videos and have literally just gone and bought affinity photo. Above video was exceptional, lots of information to refer back to - I have just bought a Vaonis Vespera II smart telescope complete with a full compliment of filters (all 3) so there is lots of opportunities over the winter months to have a play. Again, thank you so much for your macros and also the tutorial - happy times ahead :)

Hey James, really apriciate your content and your work. I have a question that has been bothering me for the past few days. I've read that Affinity can not display anything above 8-bit unless you have an HDR monitor, and you work with 32-bit HDR image. But those discussions on forums are dated by 2020-2022. Right now I'm using latest 2.5.3 version of Affinity. Question is, is there any way to see and work with 10-bits that my monitor supports? I'm just rendering products using blender and a lot of times there some soft gradients. They look disgusting in affinity, while blender compositor handles them well. My biggest dream is to edit my 16-32 bit .exr renders, without seeing those ugly gradients.

@@JamesRitson Thanks. I was able to get a 6 month free trial of Affinity Photo 2 and so far haven't been able to get anything work except stacking. Always has a green hue on the stacked image and not able to get rid of it. I will give these a go. Thanks again

@@JamesKelly-ne3sm Ah, is that OSC or mono data? If OSC, you might want to look at changing the bayer pattern in case Photo isn't interpreting it correctly. Alternatively, you can separate OSC data into RGB mono layers using one of my macros, then use Linear Fit (select the layer you want to use for the base scale, then select the others and go to Filters>Astrophotography>Linear Fit to balance them)

Awesome video! I purchased Affinity Photo specifically to edit my astro images - even before I purchased my astro gear. Because EVERYONE had tutorials using that OTHER software I just played around and experimented until I "fell" into a work flow that worked for me. BUT I never knew about the stacking and astro features until I upgraded to Affinity Photo 2 recently. Apart from my image acquisition, I do everything else in Affinity now. And now that I moved from a DSLR to OSC cooled Im on another learning curve. So I was so glad to see this and other astro tutorials you have done and new tools and ideas from this video I can practice with - THANK YOU

Are you able to use this program for stacking with only light and dark frames, just light frames or do you need to have all of the above!
@JamesRitson11 ай бұрын
Hey James, you can stack with just light frames if that's all you have (though you will have to deal with gradients, dust spots, hot pixels and other artefacts). Lots of remote telescope data will only serve up calibrated FIT light frames anyway!

Bugga ; I need antidepressants after watching most of your videos James 😄 ---- why didn't I know THAT sort of thing? ! I couldn't keep track of so many macros !! Dodge and Burn ; one of the oldest tools from the darkroom and a tool not mentioned enough imo . I have always (from PS7) used a white or black or even colour ;) light soft (10% give or take) brush on a 100% opacity softlight layer and use multiple stroke to paint in the effect . I guess it's very similar to as I do in my old Lr5 ( so grad I didn't move past Version 5 --- I beatya there Adobe 🥳) Apart from maybe being "the younger" way , is your way greatly different in the final results ? I also add/have in macros a mask to make easier reductions I find using colour brushes is great for colour toning B+W files or even adding selective a colour to a colour file . For me; it just seems simpler than some of the "have to have/use" newer ways .
