Timeless! Long live this WU style of Taichi forms , beautifully executed by a great master. I did practise this form in 1972, taught by HK instructor.

Hey fellow enthusiasts. Any chance anyone knows the reason/application for the squat/sit down move following right kick at 10.29. Other Wu Styles have cut it out. It would be great to know its original meaning. Cool move, I would reintroduce it, if I knew its purpose.

I learned a variant of Wu style that had a "twist and sit" form at about the same place. It follower "box opponent's ears." I learned it from TR Chung, who was a student of Kuo Lien-Ying, in China. It was Professor Chung's favorite set. He also taught what is known as "Kuang Ping" (he called it Yang Style A) and the more popular Large Frame Yang Style (which he called Yang Style B.) He taught me a self defense application for every move in the Wu Style, and the Twist and Sit was just a repositioning move, to neutralize an advance from the opponent, possible for use in a crowded position, like being stuck in a corner. Prof. Chung's version is a somewhat more vigorous (but still soft ... elastic) version, which takes 7-8 minutes to complete all 108 movements.

Hi, in Tai Chi as with other traditional martial arts a scissor stance usually indicates a take down of some sort. The idea being to take a person to the floor while you are able to maintain an awareness of your surroundings. This is the reason the TMA don't usually engage in complex ground work. In this instance given it follows a kick and Tai Chi kicks are in the main delivered by what is known as the "three leg kick" method (you are holding your opponent when you kick them), you would be holding their R arm/ wrist / shoulder. Assuming the kick is delivered successfully and you have therefore a chance to engage in a takedown, it's easy to see how the application follows. Watch the video and track the performers right arm imaging him holding the wrist of an opponent. As he does the cross step he performs a pull down followed by a twist and a lift. The twist and lift would rotate the other's arm presenting the locked elbow upwards which would then be pressed by the performer's left arm as it threads through and drops and reinforced by the sinking of his body weight. There are methods to apply the application without grabbing the wrist by sticking and spiralling, but they would be hard to describe in text. As TaiChiGhost pointed out a similar stance is sometimes (rarely these days) used after boxing the ears, this is again a take down using a head hold neck wrench after successfully delivering boxing the ears. The wrapping motion of the arms after the double strike illustrates the right arm reaching behind the opponent's head and the left forearm going across the front of the head / jaw. Sadly I think these techniques were deleted because they can interrupt the flow and are a little more demanding. I include them in my own personal form. I hope that helps.

Cheng Wing Kwong who's branch has this move also learned Sun Lutnags Xingyi and Bagua. Some say it's a signature Move of CWK using Xingyi Dragon Stance.
