Today everything looks the same BOX SHAPED. Der Wienerschnitzel shaped as an a frame house so was House of Pancakes Jack in The Box had a giant box with Jack popping out as their sign and the entire building was boxed shaped (in a good way) and McDonalds of course the Golden Arches flanking left and right of the building. Old Towne Mall was unique...my mom took me there in the mid 70's to a great hobby store and in 1979 I drove one of my first dates to see Greece at the movie theater....These days are gone forever...oh let’s not forget Tail-o-The Pup and The Brown Derby's structures.

I remember wanting to buy makeup and perfume from these stores. I loved them. But I was very young. The prices were too high for our family. Going there was a special treat. I didn’t know that they lasted only til ‘88.

I worked at the Glen Bernie and Lutherville MD stores. I loved being a sales associate..it was fun..I actually wanted to get my Tandy pin. However when I transitioned to Manager that sucked bad. 54 hrs a week with one day off one week 2 days off next week. Then your holidays were your time off. I added up all my hours and found out I was making 5 cents above min wage. I went ballistic. Riley (nice person) was our division manager. He said we work hard and we play hard. Well the play hard never came and said "see ya"!

I am so glad my dad would explore california and find all these off beat places. Moro Bay, Andersen's, Santa Claus Village. An off highway stand that sold nuts and fruits near Oceano and Nipomo. Pismo beach clam soup. Hearst Castle. Solvang Danish. Haven't been up there since my grand kids crew up. Thank you for the memories.

I recall eating there the first time in probably 1966 or 68. Eat there a couple of other times in the early 80’s. I recall my last meal there in 2009 on a return trip from LA. The soup seemed a bit bland and the service was awful. I like split pea soup and make multiple times a year.

My family would stop here on the way up to Pismo Beach where our grandfather lived. We usually ordered the 'Traveler's Special' from the menu which was a bowl of split pea soup and half a sandwich. In later years, I learned about a 'secret' entrance to an underground cave inside the restaurant. On a hot day, the cave was always cool and refreshing. This was where the proprietary Andersen's Cherry Wine was sold, and tastings were always available. I fell in love with this cherry wine after the first taste. After I got married, my new wife also loved the wine and her very first taste of split pea soup! Retail grocery stores used to carry several varieties of canned Andersen's Split Pea Soup. I wonder if they still do. Hmmm.........
