Interestingly, the new Roland Juno D6, D7 and D8 come with class compliant USB. One would hope class compliant USB is coming to the Fantom series.

Hi @jbognap Talking to a couple of guys I know that work on embedded projects. I asked the same question and what they said is it depends on how the hardware has been configured. In that they said that does the USB microcontroller support a class compliant implementation as it is not necessarily a purely software driven implementation. Hopefully it is just the case the they can re-write the firmware for the USB microcontroller to be class compliant, but then the question is this a user or dealer upgrade? Jon

Hi @Johnsormani I have seen a number of D-series synths, mainly the Roland D-10 and Roland D-20 where this has been undertaken. At the end of the day if you unplug the keyboard and use MIDI to drive the keyboard you get all the goodness of the synth in a smaller package. I think it is a shame however that someone did this to a classic synth as opposed to buying the D-110. Of course I am assuming that the keyboard wasn't completely 'knackered' before the conversion. Hi @mcal27 Yep, you got me. And thank you for the offer. I have just finished wiring up the new racks including the MUSE Receptors. As I have said in a recent video, my RED receptor 1.0 Rev C which is labled IK Multimedia needs some work. It has different rotary knobs to the other machine and someone has replaced the power supply, which is not really fitted correctly. I am sure that as I start digging into the more technical side of the machine I will be seeking advice. Jon

For clarification, Behringer uses ARM chips to emulate digital synths, but uses analogue electronic components to simulate analogue synths, no? Behringer 's UB-Xa is a fully analogue synth with 16 note polyphony, but still with an affordable price tag. That's proof that supports Espen's claim that analogue synths don't need to be super expensive. The kind like OB-X8 are just borrowing the brand image and expensiveness of the original vintage synth to sell at a higher price ---- which is why Espen calls it a scam I suppose. Personally, I like to simplify things: The synths that are affordable for me are the good synths. The ones out of reach are not 😅
@TheMusicTechGuyUK
@TheMusicTechGuyUK 4 күн бұрын
Hi @midimoog Interesting that we have two different interpretations of the statements that have been issued by Behringer. My understanding was that Behringer spent the money developing the ARM technology so they could accurately model both Analogue and Digital synths. Yes there many be physical components in the signal part but the way the synth functions and generates sounds is done, in the main through the modelling. Another reason I have this view is that Behringer have issued a number of statements over the years stating that the delays to new synths has been predicated in the completion of the ARM development. As always I stand to be corrected by someone more in the know. And at the moment I do not have the desire, and as tempted as I might be, to open up the Behringer UB-Xa sitting next to me while writing until at least the warranty runs out! Jon

Well said, thanks! My own opinion (if anyone cares ;-), is on the side of the user interface discussion. Being a 40+ year IT prof I really don't wanna be bothered with a Windows or Mac computing environment to compose and create music or sound patches with. I very much enjoy the physical experience of turning knobs and dials and switches. Having a see of LEDs welcoming me in my home studio, consistently puts a smile on my face each and every day. Especially now with the controversy of the major operating system spying on it's users (the Win 11 copilot ongoing saga, Apple putting AI chips for pattern recognition in all its modern hardware to detect abusive content.....) my appetite for modern operating systems has gone down to zero (obviously Linux/BSD systems being the exception). I did get a bit peeved by Espen's remark about the Osmose. Obviously the Osmose sound engine is based on the Eaganmatrix Sharc DSP architecture, by definition it is a computer in a similar way that our microwave is a computer. But Espen does totally miss the amazing "user interface" of the Osmose: the keyboard that allows you to manipulate the VCA and/or VCF envelope curve of each and every note you play independently. One question, do I understand that the OB-X and UB-Xa synths are indeed software emulations of the chipsets? I understood that both Oberheim and Beringer do use modern version of the original oscillator and filter hardware chips.

Hi @ghavinga Thanks for the comments. like me it sounds like you are more of a tactile environment musician as opposed to an in the box type of musician. I agree that with the computer platform manufacturers falling over themselves to be the buzz word in AI that they are starting to concern everyone with data usage. I also work in the IT industry and am caught between productivity and privacy when it comes to AI. Going back to your specific question. Behringer have been very open on how they have used the ARM platform to model the source synths that they are bringing forward to market. And like I said in the video Oberheim have not made similar disclosures, but my understanding that they have also followed this pattern to allow them to give you that 3 synths in 1 tag line. (In fact cynically maybe technology sharing was the deal that was done when Behringer gave Tom the worldwide rights to use the name back?). Jon

I still don't understand this stupidity of roland to not make the fantom Class compliant. There is the Numa X Piano for half the price and it is class compliant. Only recently they made the Juno-D6-D7-D8 class compliant
@TheMusicTechGuyUK
@TheMusicTechGuyUK 8 күн бұрын
Hi @jjptech My theory on this is that Roland came up with an integration chipset and code that allowed them to integrate their instruments using USB and have continued to incorporate that pattern into their designs basically because: a) It worked and was proven. b) they bought so many chips that they wanted to use them up! 😉. The downside to what Roland has been doing for years is that they have to keep maintaining drivers for multiple operating system platforms. And when they stop this maintenance their instruments stop working, everyone screams and the instrument stops working. I think a) is more likely where as b) is more a cynical. But the latest Roland Juno-D range means that there is no more platform code management. Well that is my thoughts anyway. Jon

I too have just refurbished my studio and bought the lambden audio la-8x system, wiring looms, and an extra la-8x speaker for the centre channel (part of a 5.1 setup). I’ve used studiospares for years and also was horrified they’ve gone into liquidation, BUT, I did a search on companies house and the company has only been registered since 2017 which could indicate that they went and came back before, so who knows, they may reform!! Sadly though, I think lambden audio was one of their operations. I’ve also got a pair of their seiwen monitors, amazing kit. I hope they come back but it not, RIP

Hi @thedeclansmith Funny enough wiring looms were in the cart! You like many others used them, and at the time of writing the winding up meeting would have happened yesterday and a quick look at the balance sheet for the last accounts that were filed show that the company was insolvent as at 31 December 2023. So may be the takeover rumours were right and without a fresh injection of capital they couldn't continue. You will note that the Gazette notice does say voluntary winding up. Which normally means the shareholders are no longer willing to support the losses any more. And you are right this is a relatively new company, which means this could be what we use to call a phoenix company, i.e. the previous one also ceased trading and the assets were purchased from the administrators in a pre-packaged deal. However, which every way you look at this I suspect that the amazon culture has had a big part to play with dubious quality cables, manufactured in the Far East being sold for peanuts and the uneducated basically buying cheap and not quality. We will see if StudioSpares Worldwide Limited is a phoenix for this one! Jon
@thedeclansmith
@thedeclansmith 16 күн бұрын
@@TheMusicTechGuyUKTheir looms are brilliant, they are neat and just work. Their powered monitors are also very good. Like you said, the Amazon culture has flooded the market with cheap non-sense. What’s really sad is that it’s not actually cheap because they fail meaning you’d have to purchase more. I don’t want to be chasing issues. Always better to wait until you can afford what you want rather than trying to take shortcuts. The insolvency from last years accounts may explain the amount of promotions they’ve had this year. Let’s hope the phoenix rises from those ashes.

I remember this happening to me when I was learning MIDI. The Roland U220, while a single box, is also multi-timbral meaning it can play up to 6 different parts at a time. Each part gets a different receive midi channel. Likely there is a part on the U220 listening on channel 1 and likely a timbre on the M3r listening on channel 2. This would cause both instruments to play a note at same time. Hope it helps.

I was the UK Dealer/Support for a number of years. We sold them to loads of Bands and Musicians. Jules Holland used one live for many years. I was sat backstage in Lincoln when he tested it..by using it for a full gig.. I was terrified! but it worked great and he bought two!. I was hoping that muse would put more work into the uniwire plugin which allowed it to work within a DAW as a plugin, but it never worked reliably. I could have sold lots to Film Composers as a way to expand their plugin capacity above what their MAc G5 (etc) could handle. I have literally just bought one again from a client to refresh myself with.

Hi @mcal27 As I have said several times on the channel I thought that the MUSE Receptor concept was brilliant and never realised its full potential. I have seen several high profile musicians and bands that bought into this technology but I suspect that when MUSE pulled the plug on the hardware platform they though it was too much of a risk to continue to use it. Plus more uptown date VST's would not be supported. I have two 1 Rev C's in my collection. One has been tampered with by a previous owner and I would like to restore the internals back to factory, specifically the power supply. I would also like to get a higher model; 2, Trio or Quattro. But these do not come up very often. But thanks for your comments. Jon

Thanks for the useful info here. If I could be so bold as to add my 2c worth: the biggest issue with the JX-8p is the “LMH” switch on the backside near the audio outputs. It’s the 8P’s Achilles’ heel. MANY of them have been sold as “not working” when in fact the only thing they need is some contact cleaner sprayed into this switch. The other biggie which is pretty much universal across them all is the aftertouch strip failing. This doesn’t stop you using the synth, but prevents you from using the aftertouch functionality which really adds another dimension to the keyboard. 🙂

Hi @Pamberjack_ Thanks for your comments. From the work that I have undertaken on the Roland JX-3P and Roland MKS-20 I wonder if the switch is a common failure point as on both these the "LMH" switch has needed work or replacement. Thanks you for the information on the aftertouch strip. It was interesting that many other commentators had not raised this as an achilles heal. Jon

Hi Jon, Thanks for featuring my comment. Delighted to say my Yamaha TG77 got a full service and is now fully MOT'd for the foreseeable! I imagine the first service it's gotten since whenever it was purchased in around 1989 or so. My first move was to do a visual check for bulging/leaky caps of which there were none, visually the unit appeared to be in perfect condition. Diagnostic mode showed no faults, with the exception of the internal battery reading 2.7v or 2.8v, which does not show as an error in Diagnostic tests. This was the obvious first step as I read in some old forum posts that unusually (to me) issues with internal battery can eventually effect the sound generation aspects of the synth. I had a battery holder fitted in an easily accessible part of the inside of the TG, new internal battery but alas the same issue persisted. I had initially thought that the 'clipping/distortion' issue was only occurring or much more prevalent on the AFM engine of the synth, however after some testing and trouble shooting this was found to not be the case. Both AFM and AWM engines were affected, and snowballed with higher velocities and with more polyphony. Cut a long story short, thankfully I have family member who is a tech and music tech wizz, who carried out the entire troubleshooting proper and repair. So what I thought to be distortion or clipping if I remember correctly was a square wave clock being superimposed somewhere along the way. With this issue occurring from the main outputs and headphone out. The faulty component for the main outputs was this : PCM56P DAC which was getting strange measurements compared to the other DACS. Essentially they believed it to be running internally at a different clock speed that the big YM3029 digital chip and creating that harsh square wave on the analog output of the PCM56P. Ended up removing the Main outs DAC and individual outs 5-8 DAC, installed sockets and swapped those DACs. All of the analog board was checked for issues too, everything else was all good! Picked up a PCM56P myself for the individual outputs after the main repair was complete, popped it in and everything has been running great since. The TG77 is still an absolute monster of a synth 35 years later. Really a remarkable synthesizer for 1989 that would still turn heads today! Hopefully this comment will be somewhat helpful to other people out there experiencing similar issues with their TG or SY 77! Cheers, Ross

I agree with your points for a surface. My question is how IS the system 8 (or system 1 for that matter) for an instrument controller? Not talking about Roland VSTs. For instance, Vengeance or Omnishpere? I ask because I am unaware of any midi keys out there (aside from possibly sledge 2.0) that are laid out similar to your standard multi osc synths and this is the controller style which I would like. thanks!

@TheMusicTechGuyUK 29 күн бұрын
Hi @hansolowmfers Both the Roland System-1 and Roland System-8 transit control codes from the encoders. This is basically how the VST understands what is being moved on the hardware synth when used with the software versions. I am therefore sure you can map these control code commands to another soft synth environment. Might be a little tedious to get it working the way you want it. Jon
