This was quite a fun watch. I loved seeing a bit of the history of a book series that I loved listening to (I mainly experienced it through library audio books). And to see that you were able to cause quite a stir, that it would help revitalize this old franchise is both fun and inspiring.😊 I can only hope that this graphic novel revitalization will help to bring in newer readers, and stir their imaginations. Just as it did for others years ago. Also, I agree that there should be a new illustrator with each new volume. Both for tradition, and also to keep within the spirit of the original books. Not to mention that it would be interesting to see how each artist/author would depict the story and characters.

I'm finishing up a recap series on the 39 Clues, the comic book got me interested in it again. I was never smart enough for the book and cover clues, but I could figure out the plots clues though 😂. Great video, and I hope the Netflix adaption turns out something decent in a timely manner. They could bring in the team that did Carmen Sandiego!

Wow, the production value on this video is incredible. I originally liked the first ten books, but I found myself really not enjoying the Cahills vs. Vespers arc at all when I was a kid. Maybe I should give it another try.

Thank you!! I wasn't aiming for it to seem expensive, rather just wanted to lay out the information as clearly as possible and include as much from the source material as I could. You should totally give it another try!

Crazy to hear that the whole resurgence was due to your project. My dream adaptation would be something like the Avatar people doing an animated adaptation. For live adaptation I think kids would age out before they could cover the first arc.

Thanks for believing in me! I feel the same way about the PJO adaptation, too. I understand that live-action MIGHT have a larger audience pull, but when it comes to accurate character designs, circumventing physical limitations of real actors, whatever absurd science or magic or monster VFX is involved, and the eventual addition of newer stories... Animation is always the more versatile medium!

Hey Cahill fam! A fellow agent put me onto the fact that a SEQUEL to the graphic novel - an adaptation of Gordon Korman's ONE FALSE NOTE - has been slated for release on September 4th, 2024... And the artist ISN'T ETHAN YOUNG! I can't believe I'm saying this but let's support the release, and show Scholastic that the 39 Clues are still worth fighting for! www.amazon.com/39-Clues-False-Graphic-Novel/dp/1339026481

Using my pinned comment to report in with some corrections to the case file: the graphic novel was actually published April 4th, 2023, NOT April 3rd. Additionally, "Outbreak," the final book, was published in 2016, NOT 2015 as I claimed!

Love the video. I just searched up The 39 Clues on KZbin after reading the first ten books of the first series for the first time (yes I'm very behind on the times) and am thrilled to see people still caring about this amazing series. It's so great to see such old books still getting recognition all these years later. And I can completely relate to having amazing ideas stolen from right under your nose, but we will all remember the true person who inspired the TV series :D

Man what a blast from the past! This video made me vividly remember hunting down every single 39 Clues book in my entire city’s library system, praying that the librarians hadn’t removed the cards and reveling in any missed ones (and despite all that I was a Janus kid lol). I’m so so glad your pitch actually touched Hollywood and Scholastic and helped bring back such a powerhouse of a series! Watching it live in that screening was a delight!

Man, I haven't revisted this series in so many years, and never really heard anyone oline discuss it before, This is a really cool video that deserves more views, glad it randomly got in my reccomended. Cool to see this video, glad to hear and have confirmation the books old books hold up, I always remembered them well, and yeah, the way those excerpts you played of the audiobooks still go hard all these years later, some great descreption of the scenes in their wording from the books. Anyway, this is an interesting video, a revist to my childhood, and a cool semi retrospective that tells your history with it, the reboot, and how you may have played a part in the reboots ended up like they did. And yeah, seems reboots of series have a rather, unreliable, track record, unfortunate this series hasn't returned in ideal fashion, though unfortunately not much of a suprise since that's a common situation. But from what you say, it's not too bad of a case, and I was kinda anticipating a worse situation just reading the title and such. Sounds more of the more typical issues of adaptations and rereleases classic fans often tend to have with them. Of uneeded changes of that kind that ignore the original intent and purpose. I'd reccomend changing the title into somethimg less negative if you genuinely feel it's an OK revival, though I understand why people aim for eyecatching titles and such for the algortithm. The word dissapointing or etc would likely have a similar pull instead of captials "SUCKS" Cool video, makes me relive some nostalgia, Maybe I should get an audiobook and rexperience the OG series again.

I'm really glad you enjoyed the snippets from the audio book!! Many of the scenes are really powerful, and David Pittu is an incredible narrator and his voice does them all justice. He's mesmerizing to listen to. I like the way you put it, as a retrospective, because it really is a look at the past that not only deals with WHAT happened, but how my personal story comes to be intertwined with it all! It's true, you read me like a book! I only picked the title I did because I wanted to grab attention. Truth be told, I was really angry when I first started reading it (and FUMING when it was first announced) and that's genuinely how I felt about it then. But when I tried to analyze it more properly, I did find that it's not *that* terrible. So you're right, I do feel like it's an OK revival in the end, but "SUCKS" just sounded so punchy! 😁

I am not trying to say you are necessarily wrong here, but for what it is worth Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson books just hit TV (and was in the works at the relevant times). So it is possible that people were looking into adapting his other work for that reason.

No, totally! You're right in another way - that was my motivation for delving into my original project in the first place! Great video! I pretty much agree with everything you said. the thing that stuck out to me abt the new adaptation was the lack of interactivity. I was too young to be there when the game was active but i know i woulda loved it. So its pretty disappointing that theres nothing like that now, even when it betrays the spirit of the series. Also the home base games are pretty boring. Also i remember that i first picked up the 39 clues because i looked at the covers and thought it was a fantasy series. i dont think past me would have picked it up if the covers were like the graphic novel's.

I know they say not to judge a book by its cover, but that's the way the whole publishing industry works, and SJI Associates recognized that! Their incredible covers had SUCH a magnetic pull on me. As a kid, you could always catch me staring at them every time I went to Indigo. The yellow one (Beyond the Grave) with the Egyptian artifacts was my favorite!

Ah! I love your breakdown so much! You have a fantastic grasp on what I loved from the books, even if I didn't realize it: the coded backgrounds, the game/card clues, the graphic novel adaptation's coloring??? Also oh my god, I can't believe the Holts didn't get their matching purple jumpsuits!! Irina and Alistair look incredible, oh my god. I agree. Most importantly, it feels like Dan's interest in history was so subtle the references colored over it. Which I can kind of understand because I think it was forgotten in the fandom as well at the time. Still, it makes the novel feel so different, and the ninjas will 150% coming back in the third book. They could've made him interested in anime/old pokemon cards/yugioh and it would've worked much better imo. And what the fuck is up with his photographic memory?! Oh No... you're starting a Nellie section. I'm TERRIFIED, lol. Nellie has such a fantastic character. I wish they put more piercings on her in the graphic novel, and I suppose looking more of today's 'punk'. I really don't like how Amy and Dan don't save themselves half the time though; that was what made the book series have so much weight. They had to destroy priceless paintings and statues and untouched weapons/areas to escape. Congrats on your animation though! It's lovely! If you finally managed to pull the 39C out of development hell, however it happens, I'm going to be one very happy adult. I'll go see it either way, haha. Congrats on your degree as well!
@SaraSanddollar

I so massively appreciate your long reply!! It's nice to see someone liveblogging my essay LOL. I just wanted to say that you're such a genius - boys Dan's age are almost ALWAYS into anime/Pokemon and if his interest in Japan came from being, well, a weeb, it would be realistic and solve so many of the problems making him a comic book/superhero fan caused. It's the perfect middle ground. "They had to destroy priceless paintings and statues and untouched weapons/areas to escape." You are SO RIGHT, I think that really ties into that big theme of wealth/class/poverty I touched upon: to Amy and Dan, the destruction of artifacts and locations isn't just part of action-adventure tropiness, it's the entire point of what makes them good protagonists. To them, there are things that are more important than wealth, money, million dollar cheques, jewelry, photographs, baseball cards, busts of Napoleon, property, and power. Their lives and each other's safety is more important. Precisely because they're penniless orphans, they have a better appreciation of what really matters. And that's how they're able to win in the end: they show everyone else that family > the 39 Clues. Thank you for all your kind words! I really hope we get to talk about a fully-realized series soon :)

I read the first series in Portuguese (not sure if the rest were ever translated) and I'm really sad the publishers here did only the bare minimum. I had heard somewhere about collectible cards, probably the wiki, though I certainly didn't get any with the books, but this is the first I'm hearing about the forum and the site and the rest. It was still a very fun adventure (even if I'm a bit skeptical that it holds up as well as you say), but apparently the original experience was even better. Let's hope for good adaptations in the future.
