It's a bit sad to see these one time 'visions of the future' for pedestrians disappearing at a rate of knots. We've lost so much of its kind in recent years. The footbridges from the Haymarket Centre and the closure of the first floor balconies to the public. The subways at the Magazine and London Road. I suppose that the indoor market almost counts in this category too, as it contained very distinct walkways between the floors. As well as the beautiful walkway over the old Bowstring Bridge and the viaducts. Few of these are mourned over. Indeed, the city does benefit from the loss of some of the more brutalist of these structures. But they were the mark of an era. And the fact that every such thing of this particular age is being forever erased from memory makes me a little downhearted, as I remember growing up in a time when they were very much a distinct aspect of the modern city. Love or hate them.
