I only know this song by Nat King Cole, and I think I have known it most of my life. So pleased to hear this excellent version by Jordan. Also one of the best right hands I have heard him do. Well Done.

I love your piano playing. Your singing is fine. I ask you though to try something with your singing - just for fun. You have a nice voice - a nice tenor. You sing from far back in your mouth - your throat - for a pure sound. That's how we are taught to sing in a chorus. But you have a microphone. Louis Armstrong sang in the same range as you, but his voice sounds lower because he sang in the front of his mouth and added that raspy thing to give it some personality. Another example; Dean Martin sang in the middle of his mouth to give it some depth. Singers can do that with microphones. You don't have to change the way you record. Just have some fun with it on your own. Move your voice around front to back and hear what happens. Also, carry the phrase -- you seem to want to sing a lot of words quickly -- nope -- take your time to carry the phrase. As they used to say "lay back." Love you man!!! You the best!

Damn, really good texture in your interlude. Peggy Lee recorded this song in 1959 (?). Frank Sinatra conducted the orchestra. The orchestra was the best. Sinatra paid the bill for the best arrangement ever and the best orchestra (just listen to the trumpet solo in the intro). I believe it was the best recording ever in terms of arrangement, performance and engineering. EVER! And you did a good job!!!! Good work. You the man!!! Take care.

how did you learn to sing jazz? I want to sing it but I don't know my singing style
@jordanasmussen
@jordanasmussen 4 күн бұрын
That's such a great question, MyNameIsNotShane! I've been very much an amateur singer for most of my life (in choir at school etc.), but I really started getting into jazz in late high school. I've been to a few jazz workshops and had a few lessons here and there, but really most of my learning has come from listening to jazz, and a lot of it! There are lots of different approaches to singing jazz, but it is quite different from other styles of singing. One good way to 'sound more jazz-y' when singing is to think about how you would speak the words, and try to sing it that way. So you don't necessarily need to use really long-held notes, for instance, and the 'phrasing' (the way a musical 'sentence' flows) should reflect how the lyrics would literally be spoken. Within jazz alone, there are so many different styles of singing, so I'd really suggest listening to a whole heap of different jazz singers, and see what styles you enjoy the most. If there's a particular song you really like, try listening to different versions of it, and see how each singer might have a slightly different take on the melody. And with all of that, be sure to sing along! I hope some of that might be useful to you. I've actually got a Discord server (though it's pretty small at the moment), so if you want to chat some more about jazz singing, that might be a good place for it! The link's in the description.

In December 1999 the BBC did a program called "Songs of the Century". It listed in reverse order the 100 most popular songs of the twentyeth century. "Yesterday" by The Beatles came first. "Stardust" came second. There was an overwhelming choice by the viewers of whose version to play. They chose the Nat King Cole version. That is my favourite version, closely followed by Billy Eckstine. Anyway, another great performance by Jordan. Lovely ending also.

What an awesome bit of history. Thanks for sharing, Trev! I love both the Nat King Cole and Billy Eckstine versions too. I wonder what songs would be picked if they ran the same survey today. So many of these great tunes are fading all too fast from the public consciousness, so I'm glad I get to help (in some small way) to keep them alive.
