I hate Phillipa Gregory and boy do I wish someone else would take a modern crack at making something about this marriage. This show is really good but I feel like Elizabeth sort of got lost in the middle of it.

Similar to Queen Hapshut of Egypt, I suppose. However, the two ladies were not alike and the Ancient Egyptian women had power equal to men in many cases.

The television equation of Revision Texts for A level history students. Unlike the engaging Elizabeth R starring Glenda Jackson (due to her tour de force performance) this equally studio bound production, with the atmosphere of a staged play on video, lacks any context to allow a general audience to understand who is who, who represents what and what is going on in a production as dry and stodgy as a 1950s Rada school stage show with stiff RP accents. There's a reason they don't make them like this anymore. The main one being not everyone is a student of medieval history. Refreshing to see something so uniquely archaic and the opposite to accessibility posted on You Tube as you can't even see this on BBC iplayer or Britbox

This is one of the best things I've ever seen. It certainly ranks alongside Elizabeth R and I Claudius. The writing and acting is phenomenal. The humour and drama is beautifully handled. I've just watched it for the third time and already I miss it.

David Starkey knows his history. Would love to see him do more, even if it is the Tudor family again.

This series never had a UK DVD release, which is a great shame. James Maxwell was superb as Henry 7th. Though their are limitations with studio being the predominant factor, this BBC series runs rings around anything being produced by the state broadcaster in 2024. The 1970s were the golden age of British TV, and Shadow of the Tower is a remarkable series worth investing time in.

31:20 I think this is a mistake. The Battle of Towton in 1461 was a victory for the House of York and allowed Edward IV to claim the throne. If "Old York" that Lincoln is referring to is Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York, then he died at the Battle of Wakefield in 1460.

This is indeed interesting and to add to the comment from, I notice a fellow countryman, it reminds one that their is an aristocracy of thespian genealogy on display in dramatisations of historical material. How essential they have become in assisting scholars in dazzling us.

I agree I think with the spirit of your indignation. I think though that we might have hoped for a middle and meaningful ground for her public life - something between babies, hubris and fantasy. The Queen's private secretary Sir Edward Young did try to define a role or context suitable to her personality, whatever that may ever have been and strengths, such as they ever were. As for babies, it's her children I feel badly for. Let us return to our program ... Elizabeth R ... dim the lights.

@@CaruthersHodge More like elation, knowing that waster who had t marry into the Monarchy in a shameful attempt to become a somebody, while failing to understand what the monarchy is actually all about, will never be Queen, in the same sense that her undeserving wastrel of a husband will never be King. It's not something you marry into. You don't put a ring on your finger, say "I do", and become Queen over night. It's something that your born into. It's a line, a lineage. Megan was never in that line. Even if she was, she was in no position to leap frog over William & Kate, because she married the spare. No, not indignation. Elation. The public of the time hated Margaret Of Anjou, for basically the same reason, because she was another outsider, who plotted and schemed her way through Royal life, without ever actually having done anything to deserve what she'd got, while she flaunted her wealth in the faces of a destitute public.

@@cadderley100 Thank you for the very spirited and fulsome assessment of the Sussex disaster. I couldn't agree more on the subject of the Duchess. Although she has a cunning, animal kind of shrewdness, she simply has no understanding of English public life rather like Wallis Simpson in the 1930s and at least the Windsors had the good sense to melt into the background and occupy a world of endless cocktail parties and tanning holidays. Margaret of Anjou was brighter than the mad Duchesses. I'm sure the Monarchy will outpace and overcome this problem. The intense concentration of emotion and appreciation with death of the late Queen, as well the transformation of the King and the very real bonds of ancient meaning and heritage have, I feel, blown the Sussexes out of the water.

A curious side step in subject matter and so where do we stand ? Shame on the step father and shame on the BBC. You should both be ashamed of yourselves and pay. And Seymour at least did, although for different reasons. Should a BBC script forbade mention of Seymour's naughty advancements ? I imagine we need another documentary and another presenter.

I kinda feel sorry for Sir Simon Montfort (or “Mountford”) when he looks totally bewildered being escorted to the gallows. Like he didn’t even seem all that interested in plotting with the Yorkists, he just wanted to waffle about jousting and the Earl of Essex’s green pavilion :/

She was a Great Queen she put UK on the map in many ways only she had no children so it was the end of the Tudors rulng UK, but what she did was to put UK on the map and made us Great and always there and our Parliment started to grow after that into what it is today . Very amazing how it all happened to come to our lovely England always on top thereafter!

remember in those days a pound was 240 silver pennies. The value of a 1509 penny was 25 pounds in 1971 and that was worth about 600 pounds in 2024. So Henry paid Cabot the worth of nearly 6 million pounds.
