I've never driven a C4 but I've owned and driven C3s and they are front heavy. I've also driven C3s with both big block and small block engines. While the handling of the C3 with a small block is OK, with the big block the car handles downright lousy. Same with my '68 Camaro, small block handling is OK, big block is a front heavy slug on the corners and only good for drag racing. That's because not only is the big block heavier but it's also longer and a couple inches more of it sits ahead of the centerline of the front spindles. That couple inches makes a big difference, which is why when they got the entire engine block to sit behind the spindles on the C4 it also made a huge difference. I remember when the first C4 came out, people were saying you could take off-ramps at 120mph, which may have been a little exaggerated, but they were the first Corvettes that handled like a true sports car. Another thing, I once ran across a fuel tank from a late 70s C3, out of the car, and I noticed it had a false bottom filled with some kind of weight. Another indication how engineers were trying to get more weight to the rear of the front heavy car.

1991 ZR-1 owner here. If I recall correctly ... the 'Father' of the C-4, Dave McLellan said the balance is roughly 51% front - 49% rear. Doesn't get 'much' better than that. 🤘 ^v^

Hi Michael, I don’t think Dana 44 was part of Z51 package. I think it was related to transmission. Auto = Dana 36 and Manual = Dana 44. Is yours manual?
@kussstuff2 ай бұрын
Your Right, The Dana 44 differential from 1985 through 1996 for manual transmission models. That was one of the differences from the 1984 z51. Yes, I do have a manual with the Dana 44. 👍

I wish I fit a lot better into the C4, as it is, it's like trying to jam Shrek into a clown car, I'm wearing the steering column on my legs.
@speedfiend9252 ай бұрын
I am curious how this compares to the skip shift which was implemented in 89-96 in the manual C4s with the 6 speed manual. I had it in my C5s and really didn't like it as it often left the car flatfooted and bogged the car down by suddenly dropping the car into 4th gear. 🤔
@kussstuff2 ай бұрын
That's a good question, the 4+3 is basically a 4 speed manual with a overdrive attached that will kick on in 2-3-4 gears when little throttle is given, similar to the 6 speed drop down (I think,?) You would know better having actually owning one. When the OD is on, it will also kick in bog the car at times until you kick it out, but the nice thing is it can be turned off with a switch. I understand that the 6 speed can be disconnected too, but is a little more involved. As you know both are to save gas and both can be a pain to deal with. Thanks for the question.

some of those references don't apply to 1985 zr1, like dana 44 and other things mentioned in the beginning ,regarding 1985
@kussstuff2 ай бұрын
The C4 Corvette began using the Dana 44 differential in 1985 and continued to use it through 1996. The Dana 44 differential was used only in manual transmission C4 Corvettes and the Z51 package was only available with the manual transmission. The Dana 36 differential was used in automatic transmission C4 Corvettes and all 1984 models. The Z51 package was intended for road racers and auto crossers and was not available with the automatic transmission or convertible body style. Thanks for your input.

Thank you for the very informative video! I've been holding out for a manual C-4 Z51 myself though the only ones I tend to see for sale are the less desirable 1984 models. Without seeing the RPO codes I can only assume it's a base model.
@kussstuff2 ай бұрын
Glad it was helpful! I think it's great you're looking for a manual, there's nothing says Sports Car more than 4 on the floor. The good thing is most 4+3 C4s had the Z51 package, because they were geared to be a driver's car. Good luck finding the one for you. Thank You for the comment.

great video, nice tips. But a couple of comments: on the later C4s there isn't a hatch button on the passenger door. Nor is there an under car light by the spare. I have accidentally closed my hood with a door open and it didn't chip anything, but it is certainly a risk and I wouldn't do it - on purpose anyway. Any thoughts on closing the hood? I've seen some suggest dropping it from about a foot or so up while others say gently lower it and then press down on each corner to get it to latch shut. I'm not sure which, if either, is best.
@kussstuff3 ай бұрын
I wonder what year the C4 lost the passenger hatch button and the spare tire light? I'm sure the hood closing door problem is a tolerance problem either from factory or wear and tear, either way I will not take the chance either. Closing the hood, over the years I have tried both ways the press down and the drop. The drop is the way I mostly do it, But the drop is just barely high enough to make sure it closes about 6 or 7 inches. Thanks for watching I appreciate it.

Now all you have to do is paint the louver spears red or use red car wrap for the lovers openings themselves & leave spears black. And Then: paint the inner wheel vents & centers paint red too!!!!! LoL🤔 Or, wrap the wheels silver parts in black car wrap & paint or pinstripe the vanes red or the inner vane buckets red!🤔 Lots'a possibilities!😁 I think a black wheels with red inner vanes would look sharp!
