My late brother FLTLT "Mac" Cameron flew the Lightning with 92SQN RAF Leconfield in the early 1960's.

He was my Squadron Commander on 5 Squadron until closure. I've still got the photographs I took of his aircraft with his name. In fact I've got a few others of the same era. Great times.

Remember Flying Officer John Hall who ejected from a lightning sadly with life changing injuries. Previously John Hall flew Wessex helicopters with 18 Squadron.

Only one comment mentioning those who seviced and mended these A/C. He mentioned it was a team but no mention of those that kept him in the air.

Ian Hollingworth and his generation are bloody heroes. Quiet, resourceful and very intelligent people making a fantastic fighter jet and the guys flying them. Running out of fuel, no radar, cockpit fire, atrocious weather, looking for Russians. Dealing with all of this while remaining calm and doing his “mental maths”.

Heartwarming to see these two Queens of the Sky are back home to a bit of TLC. Well done everyone, I first saw a Lightning fly in 1962 at an airshow and was awestruck. That feeling has never left me. My dad was RAF in WWII on Halifax's, he got his wings but was BA, Nav and Radio Op from '42 to '46.

As someone amazed how Homeserve keeps my 20 year old central heating system safe and working, I have huge respect for this team of engineers who strived so hard to keep these veteren jets airworthy. Surgical precision.

Heart breaking to see a Lightning with cut wings, yes it's a big job to dismantle if you don't, I know from personal experience having dismantled a T5 at RAF Newton back in the 80's ( XS 451 which tragically crashed in Overberg AFB Airshow, South Africa in 2009) , all we can hope for is great restoration which I'm sure you guys will do, good work chaps will have to come and visit👍

What a class aircraft the English Electric Lightning was. It’s speed and manoeuvrability would still give the modern jets a run for their money.

Went to an airshow at RAF Leuchers in Fife. I was about 16 and stood about 100 feet away as they scranbled two squadrons of Lightnings at once towards the North Sea. Being 70 now my memory is not perfect, if anybody else remembers this day I would appreciate any comment. I had just started an apprenticeship at Rolls Royce in Hillingdon near Glasgow. I was lucky to get a lift every day with two guys who worked on the Avon re-heat sections of the engine. One welded the fuel rings within the re-heat section, and the other younger man inspected his work. Needless to say there were many bitchy conversations on the way home. Willie the inspector failed some weldes which reduced the old boys bonus at the end of the month. Many people worked to keep you and your people safe Dennis. The safety standards at Rolls Royce were so high back then, it was check and double check on everything.

I arrived at Binbrook from RAF Cosford in 78 and spent 18 months on ASSF…..a.k.a. the Breaker’s Yard. A shed full of about 40 Lightnings in various states of dismantlement which were gradually robbed of all their parts by whichever squadron needed them at the time. As an 18 year old singley without a car the only escape was the regular, free Thursday night bus to Cleethorpes….generously provided by the MT Flight…which usually got you back to camp at 23.30 after a sozzled evening of beery excess in The Dolphin pub. I had some great mates at Binbrook but the job ( basically helping to run an aircraft scrap yard ) was a complete and utter ball ache. The only thing I ever really learned at Binbrook was how to play Euchre, a strange card game which I play to this day and is very popular in Cornwall where they have pub Euchre leagues. On reading PMC bulletin one morning ( during one of my many stints as Tea Bar mechanic ) I saw that the RAF were asking for volunteers for RAF Kinloss. I applied, got accepted within a week and spent most of the rest of my time in the RAF on Nimrods. While in Scotland I went “native”. Learned the bagpipes, married a local girl and developed a taste for Scotch whisky. Great to see this channel and listen to the banter. Keep the faith guys.

What is the destiny for XS 459 now she is back at Binbrook ? She holds a very special place in my life as I flew her out of RAF Binbrook as part of the LTF back in 1986, just before embarking on my own RAF Aircrew career.

I'll never forget being at Cranfield when the Lightnings were cut up for scrap. Was such a sad day. As our first supersonic interceptor we should preserve the ones we can for generations to come, part of our aviation history.
