How long did this take? I'm planning to get either a x220 or t420 and I see most options available either have a 2nd or 4th gen intel cpu. I will most likely install gentoo anyway, maybe install binaries for larger packages (though that might defeat the purpose of using gentoo at all) like firefox and clang.

@@MiroslavBendik did you install in one sitting (did you have to at any time shutdown the laptop?) also was heat a problem? What were your CFLAGS and did you do any lto (+pgo?) optimizations? And most important of all, did you have any noticable performance difference compared to a binary based distro? Other than that I believe I have no other questions. Thank you for your reply.

@@scartyz762 Installed in one sitting. Heat was no problem. My cflags are simple: "-march=native -O2 -pipe -ftree-vectorize". I have pgo enabled. I don't see better performance compared to Ubuntu. For example same python runs slightly faster on Ubuntu. I am using Gentoo because i like rolling distro and don't like cutting edge software (Arch).

@@MiroslavBendik Thank you for taking the time to answer. I like using Gentoo because I compile most of the software I use anyway, but I thought especially on a system like this is where you'd notice the difference in performance. I know that Gentoo now ships out binary packages too, so there's no excuse to not use Gentoo anyway for me.

It was stray, so i don't know. Probably mix of maine coon or norwegian forest cat with something else.
