New shoes, I would think that's what gave you the calf pains. Doesn't matter how comfortable they feel, suddenly your muscles are having to deal with differences in balance, sole, support, ect. Audie Murphy is really famous but I've seen lots of hikers not really seeming to recognise the name? Maybe because we didn't have anything else apart from the telly, my generation watched a lot of older black/white films so film stars were well known for longer. Anyway, if you haven't heard of him before, it's worth looking up his war record and his life. He was like a real "Captain America", a legendary life that epitomises last century "Americana". If you look at the map of the trail, Dragon's Tooth is on the part of the trail that forms a large number "2". Useful when you are following hikers on Trail. It's very obvious once you see it. Lot's of sympathy for you dealing with the rocks, they really should clear it up. Have you seen the nice stone slabs they have in the Pennines and up North on the moors? That's my kind of trail. Have a nice break, you're doing well.

New shoes could havr been the issue. Odd seeing as they are the same zero drop design and I moved over the insole from my old pair. Could still have been it I guess. As for Audie Murphy, I became aware of him as I believe the metal band Sabaton wrote a song called 'To Hell And Back' which is either about him/heavily influenced by him.

Looks so green and beautiful. A tip for wildlife especially bears it is better that you let them know you are there but without startlingly them that gives them a cance to get away from you without having a bad encounter with them. Just talk a little louder to let them know they usually will go off away from you.

That’s what I’ve been telling my wife I say most hikers have decent money cause it takes money to do it. I spend mine in my gym. But I live close to Pearisburg Va and man that AT keeps calling my name. And might pick up a new hobby.

Very interesting insights into God telling people to help hikers. You're right, most people that are out there can afford to be out there without help. I haven't hiked it yet, (2029) but I'm planning on it and I have at least $1500 worth hiking equipment. But I know everybody that says they love Trail magic at the same time says they really don't need it. They've already got their meals and hostels planned out. Seems helping homeless people would be more beneficial to society.

Judging by the way the bear was running, i thought we might have seen a, "Exit stage left pursued by a bear" Great pictures. So after drinks at a petrol station, pizza the night before and left overs to take with you for lunch, "Let's try and get away from civilisation"😀 You must have registered the irony, I hope you did. Trail magic and feeding the "undeserving". Most people work pretty hard to earn their money to do an activity like the AT. And they usually pay their taxes as well while doing so. So are they privileged or are they just disciplined and responsible? You are looking much better and seem to be in a much happier frame of mind, good to see. Don't throw it all away and join the cult!!!!😟
@tributeontrailАй бұрын
Yes, the irony of wanting to flee civilization after revelling in it was not lost on me haha. As for the comments on privilege, I believe there is still an inherent privilege in being able to do the trail, whether you happen to just be wealthy enough to do it or if you have to save up over time. Obviously it's easier for some than others but for many people it just isn't an option. Whether for financial or health reasons, the possibility of thru hiking is just always out of reach, no matter how disciplined they might be. And yes, I'm feeling much better in myself thank you, glad that it's noticeable.
@gingrai00Ай бұрын
Maybe just be grateful for the kindness and not judgmental of others… Bizarre also that you seem to think that church groups who do trail magic are somehow misappropriating their kindness. Think it over some more. Good luck on your hike. I’m pulling for you!
@tributeontrailАй бұрын
I certainly am very grateful for any trail magic we come across and the kindness of people is really helping restore my faith in humanity somewhat. My comments were more specifically about those who seemingly only do trail magic because of some implied divine instruction to do so, not just because they want to. I just found it odd that god would bother those groups to help hikers when there are people in far greater need. They may well be helping other groups as well, I just haven't heard that from any such groups. I've also met a few trail angels who have preached their philosophy that 'trail magic' isn't exclusive to the trail and that they will try and help people they come across in regular life.
@gingrai00Ай бұрын
Sounds pretty prejudiced… can’t believe you don’t see it. Whatever makes you feel good about yourself.
@catherine2250Ай бұрын
To continue your thought about trail angel ministries and other ppl being more in need... I had the same thought. But as i thought about it more, I realized that these people are not out to nourish the body but rather the soul. Completing a through hike is a monumental task that will positively shape people for the rest of their lives. A lot of people want to be part of that powerful shift and support people on their hikes. I have read many stories were people were ready to quit the trail but then they met a trail angel who made all the difference. As for churches, they are more concerned about where peoples souls are going for eternity then where their bodies might be temporarily. There are innumerable outreaches for the poor by secular and churches alike but reaching out to the souls of hikers who are already on a transformative journey can be very powerful

I am very curious to know, collectively, your pack weight, the cushion of your shoes, the trail conditions…how are your knees & ankles doing? I have subscribed to your channel as well. I’m totally pulling for you 2, let’s get it man!! Cheers.

Thanks for the kind words! I'm 5'10 and when I started I was around 260/270lbs (didn't check exactly on Day 1) and now I'm around 220. My pack baseweight is around 19/20lbs and around 28-30lbs with water and food depending on how many days of food I have. Early on my knees and feet were taking a beating and it definitely helped taking it slow and doing less than 10miles a day. I still have some lingering aches and pains (but who doesn't at this point on trail) but they're getting easier to manage with each week.

Laurel falls section of AT is very unique with that beautiful waterfall and those huge rock cliffs that you hike along by the fast flowing stream. In my old college days at east tennessee state university in the mid 80's some of my dorm buddies and I would hike up to the falls and drink some cold adult beverages while chilling out in the catch pool below the falls.

Hi Jimmy/Tribute. We’re enjoying following your hike, with all its ups and downs. I hadn’t realised Roan was on the trail. When I saw the name, I thought ‘I wonder if he remembers…?’ Then you talked about only realising the link to ‘Harder than steel’ yourself in the months before you set off and the emotion of being in Roan, wondering about Jonny’s connection with the lyrics. It was certainly emotional to see you there and hear your thoughts. Thanks for sharing and may the cries of the red hawks take you soaring with them as you move on. Terry.

This upcoming weekend 4/13 & 4/14 I am thinking about doing more trail magic around carvers gap in roan mountain or up by watauga lake or shady valley at low gap or up too of Houston men off of hwy 421. I will bring more fruit as that was a big hit with the thru hikers I meet.
