If you had a team like that on the air now doing the same things D and D did, you'd have a number one radio station in Chicago. Neil Rogers was one of the best live hosts on the radio in Miami when I lived there. He'd constantly degrade the station, stupid jingles, insult management and so on. He kept AM Radio in Miami going wherever he'd work. RIP Neil Rogers. Today however radio wouldn't take the risk of programming a radio station with content that people, love it or hate it, would LISTEN TO. No wonder radio (both AM and FM) is going down the tubes so to speak.

That's not the only thing that happened on 3/12/76. That afternoon, a tornado ripped through Franklin Park and other nearby suburbs south of O'Hare. I was working for Midway Mfg. Co., just west of Grand and Mannheim, at the time, and my apartment building was a couple blocks to the NW. One man was killed at Midway when the back wall collapsed on him, but my apt building was spared, other than the corner of the roof over one unit. Nobody hurt in the apt building, but we had to evacuate until Sunday night as other buildings were damaged.

Maybe this tape exists because it was WHBF's first live locally produced newscast in color or locally produced live program in color.

WOW how technology has changed. Back then tv and radio stations had someone read the weather forecast. The maps and graphics wear all hand drawn. Then, sometime in the 70's stations started getting the idea to start hiring actual weather forecasters along with using up to date technology. What a difference comparing then to now.

I remember Diane Root. Well I vaguely remember her, considering I was like 5 years old. She had a show and I apparently was one of the kids in her group. I wish I knew the whole story. I had a picture of me sitting with a few kids gathering around her. Lady Diane I remember for some reason. Again I WISH I knew more. Or remembered more.

Reminds me of my time in TV news in the mid-70's in central Illinois. Surprised to hear the floor director snap their fingers as usually that was normally used by the director in the booth, but the talent was looking at the camera so I guess they had to improvise.

I grew up as a kid in the 1970s, and as tv was the main form of family leisure back then, I wasn't familiar with radio personalities. I recognize only 8: Gus Gnorski, John McCullough, Carl Zimmerman, Tom Hooper, Earl Gillespie, John Drilling, Howard Gernette, and of course Albert the Alleycat.

I have an idea, why not Disney take the ESPN 1000 Format put it on FM somewhere, hidden on some HD Channel. The Voice of Labor Returns WCFL. Super CFL, bring back the famous Super CFL Jingle. Doug Dahlgren would go back to morning drive, but will Doug Dahlgren share it with a new partner? Knowing the industry today, the opposite would happen. Streaming is the future.
@keithelster8858 Жыл бұрын
Disney no longer owns AM 1000, the Chicago Federation of Labor got out of the radio business in 1978 or '79, selling WCFL to Mutual, and Dahlgren is probably close to 80 by now. WCFL as it was died on 3/12/76, and it wasn't the old, tired WLS that did it in. It was WDHF 95.5 that was the final nail in the Voice of Labor's coffin. FM had finally surpassed Ancient Modulation by 1975.

Here's what Doug Dahlgren looked like ten years later in 1976: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pX7HeJeDfLmVlaM. Chicago radio nerds remember when he teamed with Dick Sainte on WCFL-AM 1000 during the mid-1970s before the station transitioned from Top-40 to beautiful music. chicagoradiospotlight.blogspot.com/2012/03/doug-dahlgren.html
