My always go-to guides, can’t thank you enough! I just got my Zf and relied on this video, although the menu seems to be a tiny bit different. Do you recommend I use the center-weighted AVG metering together with Matrix metering? Or do you use spot metering with it? Also there’s no Subject tracking for Fn button, what would you use it for instead?

The effective aperture on the Viltrox is really 1.8 though, not in terms of light gathering but in DoF. It's still a nice lens though, although I'm not ready to give up that much resolution tbh

For whatever reason, my Nikon D780 has the same sensor and features as the Z6 but the 3D Tracking *only* works with the viewfinder. Once I got a full frame DSLR with proper live view, I sort of stopped using the viewfinder altogether. I really don't know why they don't have 3D through the live view display. Whatever, the AF-S + Auto-Area AF is pretty good at catching faces/eyes. Sometimes AF-C is a bit spazzy and just puts people's torso's in focus. I'm not really a street photo expert but if you don't have 3D, AF-S + Auto-Area AF is solid.

Oh my, I love the character of this lens. I used to take similar shots on my Leica M10 + Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f1.4! That lens has a very similar character to this one but is a manual lens and has a bit of too soft looking rendering to me. Later switched to Sony with a 35mm f1.4 GM which I love but it lacks a bit of that vintage / nostalgic character this lens seems to offer. Whoa, maybe I should just pull the trigger on a Nikon Zf and that lens.

Street photographer 101 tip of the day. The holy grail of tips is that when you want to get candid shots and look inconspicuous I would advise against a z9. Of course unless your shooting from a distance or if your 6 foot 5. 😂

Great comparison actually, I feel that the viltrox is sharper while sacrificing 3d pop! The nikon 35mm's bokeh look more vintage to my eyes
@EYExplore5 күн бұрын
I agree! We shot this a few months ago, and overall, the Nikon does have a nice vintage feel. It's not perfectly sharp all the time, but the viiiiiibes.... :)

WOW, I have same experience and philosophy on 40 vs 35, did you notice better 3D pop micro contrast with Viltrox ? I found it "blah" stopped down after F1.2 ?
@EYExplore5 күн бұрын
Yeah, the micropop is there wide open but not as nice as my old Voigtlander 40mm f/2. That lens had awesmoe pop for a 500 dollar lens. The Nikon 35 is pretty good, too, but my favorite 3D pop lens these days is the Nikon 28mm f/1.4. I really hope Nikon updates this with a Z mount version some day! :)

Would you consider the Sony 1.4 35mm or Sigma 35 contemporary f/2 using a megadap adapter? I just like that they are small and have an aperture ring and can still af well but I don’t like that the adapter isn’t weather sealed.
@EYExplore5 күн бұрын
I've never tried them! It's something I might experiment with. But for now, I am pretty happy with the Nikon 35mm and have chosen it over the Viltrox. :)

40mm is a real nice focal length, how come you traded it in?? Also why aren’t you using a full frame Viltrox like their 40mm lens for Z mount?
@EYExplore5 күн бұрын
I traded it because I like f/1.4 over f/2. I shoot at night a lot and often use 1/500 shutter, so the extra light helps. As for Viltrox, I didn't mention it in this video (but did in the video we did about this lens) but I got it from Viltrox for review. I'm pretty stingy and do not suffer from GAS so I raaaaaaarely buy lenses. But if some company sends us one for free, then why not? :)

Cheers for the video, stellar camerawork by Axel and some shots that had quite a bit of atmosphere. It's kind of nice to look at a shot you took and think about(within the confines of what the video shows us) how I would've framed the same shot, for instance, going portrait mode on the liquor store and just focusing on the samurai, the bike and the crates. Gives at least 5-10% of the experience, which means a lot to me.
@EYExplore5 күн бұрын
Thank you!! Yeah Axel really shined in this one! Glad you enjoy the way we shoot these things. Actually, I did also take a portrait shot of the samurai liquor store but I guess I didn't show it for some reason. :)
You're correct about the eye see's scenario, people always say it's X mm but the thing is and the way i read it is that that is for a single eye perspective and if i remember correctly 43mm is the equivalent to 1 of our eyes field of view. But you can probably calculate it from this, each individual eye has a horizontal FOV of about 135 degrees and a vertical FOV of just over 180 degrees.
@EYExplore5 күн бұрын
Yeah, that makes sense. But I think our vision works so differently from cameras that the comparison is kind of a moot point. It's fun to think about but has little practical value for photography, in my opinion.

Appreciate that you’ve traded yours in, but it does seem a bit odd that I can’t find a dedicated comparison of the 40mm 2.0 and the 35mm 1.4. Most reviewers compare it with the 35mm 1.8S lens - not a lens I have, while a lot of Zf owners will have the 40.
@eldad48536 күн бұрын
100% I'm in the same place. Personally looking into that comparison as I am getting the Zf and thinking which one of those two lenses to get first.. I think 40mm is fast enough and it's super compact (as I travel a lot and looking for low-light street photography lens). While for sharper images I will get the S lenses later on. But yeah I'm still thinking.
@EYExplore5 күн бұрын
Yeah, I didn't think about that before I traded it in haha. But I can say this from using both lenses extensively: the 35mm is superior in all regards, except size and cost. The additional stop of light is very useful. The lens is sharper wide open (even with the larger aperture) and if felt that AF is more accurate/faster. So, to me, it was a complete upgrade. :)
@EYExplore5 күн бұрын
If size and cost are not major issues I would 100% get the 35mm. :)

Great stuff as always fellas. What do you folks look for when considering a spot to add to the map? Like what qualifies a spot to get added and what might be a factor that doesn't quite cut it? I'm curious about the general elements or ideas that kind of trigger you to start working a scene in your style. ✌️
@EYExplore5 күн бұрын
Thank you!! The spots on the map have to be kind of 'self explanatory' with the one or two example pictures that we include in the map. Also, they should be something that's repeatable and related to the physical location (not just a cool photo taken at that location but not likely to ever happen again).

Excellent comparison and analysis. I have the 35mm f/1.8 S which is quite excellent, but would also like something faster. The Viltrox looks very good, but at just over 41mm it's too close to my 50mm f/1.2 S for me to justify getting it. My wallet is glad Nikon haven't done a 35mm f/1.2 S...
@EYExplore5 күн бұрын
Thank you!! Glad you found it useful! I haven't had a chance to try to the 35mm 1.8 but I understand it's sharper and more accurate but has a more modern bokeh style compared to the 1.4. As for the 1.2... 🤫
