I don't like the exhaust heating up that rear tire blowing smoke and slippery stuff straight at it.

I bought a 79 that needed work for a "Fair weather daily driver." Still working on it. My old boss's son had an 81 that he drove to work every day unless it was snowing bad. As long as you don't bounce them around a lot, I think they are great daily drivers.

Actually you don't want the crackling and popping. Fuel is getting into the chamber on the exhaust side and the heat from the exhaust is igniting it, creating the crackling and popping of which the residue attaches to the headers or exhaust manifold. I call it exhaust cholesterol. A proper amount of exhaust backpressure will alleviate it, as well as a properly tuned engine and timing , When you let off the accelerator, a properly tuned and timed engine with the proper amount of exhaust back pressure should result in zero crackling and popping and give you a nice consistent rumble sound.

Dash cracking is common, I wouldn’t worry about the cosmetics too much, just stay on top of the of the maintenance and the car will be fine. You may want to put in new camshaft + crankshaft position sensors, those fail at some point. Check for leaking rack N pinion. If no blinking airbag light, that’s good. It’s a good car.

Three grand at 70 is my largest complaint with the '73 big block turbo 400 3 speed automatic. I lust for an overdrive to drop the rpm to a reasonable levels. With 390 ft/lbs of torque the justification for this had to be the 55 mph speed limit brought on by the fuel crises. I was a freshman in college and I amassed 7 speeding tickets in 2 months when President Nixon mandated the National Speed Limit to be restricted to 55. " I Can't Drive 55," as the song pined.....it was like the world had been dipped in molasses. I always felt the roads should have been re-striped with shorter and closer white stripes to give the visual illusion of speed at least. Hotrod's suffered back then and the '73 were the first to feel the big hand of the government swat the car manufacturer with emission controls. It is criminal my 454 is limited to 270 hp. I might have to do something about that soon.

I didn’t get that he was saying that it was a waste of money or time, but that he was actually impressed to his surprise. I’m using one of these right now on my van hood, with Maguires polish, it’s looking good. Much better than before. I can’t wait to see what they look like in the third stage.
