I know this is an old video, but I understand why there’s less trans male representation in media. For a lot of trans men, they go stealth or don’t parade their identities as much. Testosterone is also an incredibly strong hormone, so, men on HRT/surgery might pass earlier in their transition than that of a trans woman. Sadly, trans women get the short end of the stick, because they get so much hate, they also get so much praise/rep. And it’s certainly good for their stories to be told too. That’s why it’s so deeply uncomfortable for lots of trans men to see explicitly open trans men in media, where they bring up their transition or whatnot. I just don’t think it’s a natural or relatable occurrence for a standard person’s life who happens to be trans, unless the exchange in which this information is revealed, is rather intimate or heavily weighted.

I wouldn't mind if RTD cast a historical companion from the 80s, 90s or 2000s so he could use these methods he used back in 2005 more comfortably, he's shown like in It's A Sin that he is certainly very comfortable and familiar when writing for this period. As much as I would love a companion who isn't conventional and isn't from the modern day, I'm not sure striving for being comfortable is the best approach for writing Doctor Who if anything though.

@@milesmemory agreed. I think it’s the case of people overstating the collapse of television. Yes viewing habits have changed and of course ratings on average are down. However, TV still proves to be a hugely popular medium for events. Sports, news and even the occasional drama can encapsulate the public. Take line of duty for example, it’s the UKs most watched drama of the 21st century and that series aired only 3/4 years ago. Of course TV will never dominate as it once did, but I think many in the industry are far too quick to write its obituary.

they maybe could've had someone react to the events unfolding on fullscreen mode on a phone and then getting freaked out, then someone else ona pc or projector or tv setup, like different people, and families, and then at the end of the scene, them dying, tho that kind of could be a bit sudden hence it wouldn't work, the characters, on the current modern era of the show and shows, maybe then would've made more sense to be introduced, rather than just being randoms, so maybe like families and friends of some companion or relatives and cousins of those that are just ordinary people and not aware of all the alien things, then with those it would make more sense I guess or have more meaning to have the scene, like as an example, people from Donna's wedding, or like Nerys, so some character we know enough of being a side character, reacting to some social media thing on full screen or something, or then someone sending a video over text / dms with a generic videoplayer that could just be the phone's one, then could be interpreted as the intention of making it universal or like the scene having more time to stand and not being instantly outdated because of some application/social media would change their look

I hadn't realised that was Andrew Marr in aliens of london how I miss that lol. Also i find it interesting that aliens of london is where the dr who universe truly deviates from ours as prime minister Tony Blair is killed by slitheen and all prime ministers after are not from real life. So from 2006 onwards the who universe has different PMs and that makes aliens of london actually one of the most important events in dr who. I wonder if the show will ever go back to depicting real PMs like will it be mentioned that Keir Starmer is PM or will they just continue to go down an alternate reality path.

Their take on American presidents is interesting. They've basically flip-flopped between using the real names and making up their own characters. (Basically, if a story is set in the present day, the more involved a head of state is to the plot, the more likely they are to be fictional.)

This was such an interesting idea for a video! I don’t know if this is still true, but at one point, apparently Trinity Wells and the French broadcaster were the only characters to appear in Doctor Who and Torchwood and the Sarah Jane Adventures. RTD not only used the news as world-building on Doctor Who itself, but also used it to unify the Whoniverse in a really natural way through all three concurrent shows! I think Moffat was just quite uninterested in showing what the wider world felt during his tenure, maybe as a side effect of his companions being ‘special’: the girl who waited, the impossible girl etc. He is interested in why they matter to the Doctor and what they think of the Doctor, so they are less of an audience surrogate. Where Rose, Martha or Donna fail to work as an audience surrogate (like when Rose has been away for a year in Aliens of London and is out of step with everyone else, or when the ghosts arrived while she was away, and Martha has been with the Doctor and totally distracted from the Harold Saxon campaign, and when Donna and the Doctor are separated from the world in the Stolen Earth), he can use the news and wider TV media to provide a third person wider perspective for the audience of the scale of the threat in a seamless way, as it is catching the TARDIS team up on what they ‘missed’ at the same time. The wider families of RTD’s companions also help give a ground-level perspective of each issue, whilst also giving us a reason to care about what happens to modern day earth. Amy and Clara and Bill has very thinly sketched families that don’t anchor them to the present much, so we don’t ‘need’ the earth perspective really, except when it affects the TARDIS team, like in the Power of Three or the Wedding of River Song. Tbf Moffat did include BBC breakfast interviewing Charles Dickens in the Wedding of River Song as exposition about all of time happening at once, but it’s strictly expositional and I don’t think is referenced again after an initial montage. It’s so fascinating to see the different priorities of the two show-runners.

This was really fun video. there is something contemporaneously missing from Doctor Who since television has been removed. Specifically television as exposition or a demonstration of global impact. I mean imagine a Cyberman global take over demonstrated with swiping through Tiktok, india, japan, scotland, Jamaica. I feel like when social media/texting is integrated it feels natural and contemporaneous. And we can move the story along. But obviously it’s less dynamic to see an actor with a phone. However, with older show runners when they use social media they use it as plot device, rather than communication of exposition. I mean imagine if Jodie had some phones- could have broken up her exposition heavy dialogue.

One of the finest masterpieces to be ever made in cinematic history. This classic grows on you pulling you inextricably into its powerful and poignant storytelling. Outstanding cinematography by V.K. Murthy, coupled with a timeless musical score, and directorial excellence that steers clear of any stereotype, makes this a powerful cinematic journey. The profoundly sensitive performance by Guru Dutt as Vijay, the out of luck poet, is one of the finest portrayals ever on celluloid. Waheeda Rehman as Gulabo, a prostitute who loves him unconditionally, and the opportunistic and selfish Mala Sinha, Vijay's college sweetheart, give memorable performances. Finally, Johnnie Walker as Abdul Sattar, Vijay's friend, carves out an endearing comedy act that remains etched in your mind. His comic timing is matchless. The pathos in the songs of Mohammad Rafi make you want to weep over and over again. This is indeed classic cinema at its best. PYAASA is an absolute must watch movie before one dies. I have watched it over countless times...in the theatre, at home on an hd projector on a 120 inch screen, and practically died admiring its sheer magnificence and aesthetic Finally, I simply gave up counting. It's pointless to keep count of watching perfection on celluloid. It's perfectly okay for a connoisseur of movies to watch Guru Dutt's masterpieces, and forget all the other movies ever made in Indian cinema history. PYAASA, along with KAGAZ KE PHOOL, happen to be the two best things that have singularly proved to be the raison d'etre of my life. They have made my life worth living!

For not showing the bbc logo (and also why most of the news and government statements are shown within the tv "box" and not full screen) I believe its to avoid misleading the public, if someone turns on their tv and its on BBC one, dr who is on and there's a full screen "proper" looking BBC news segment, presenter and all stating that there's a dangerous virus or "EMERGENCY BROADCAST government declares state of emergency" as in one of your examples, that could easily panic someone whos not seeing it in the proper context, BBC news needs to be seen as a trusted and reliable source so out of an abundance of caution stopped attaching their logo to the fake broadcasts. There was actually a case fairly recently of a tv channel getting in trouble for something similar, cant post links on youtube but there's an article by the I with the title "Channel 4 faces Ofcom probe over ’emergency news’ stunt to promote cyber attack drama The Undeclared War".

I think the approach to social media in Dot And Bubble was a nice take on echo chambers and while it doesn't show explicit propaganda, you can infer that there exists bias and disinformation in Finetime. Not showing the format of that propaganda and simply implying its existence makes it timeless. I think RTD was being careful as to not focus on phones/TikTok/streamers, since it's a technology that changes so quickly and it would have been obsolete in 5 years. And probably not in a charming early 2000s way.
@milesmemory

Yes! I think what actually makes Dot and Bubble work and will be lasting is the ironic element that I think it would actually still work pre social media. Whilst there is a clear element that we associate with social media, it's ideas really aren't bound to it and the issues it explores are certainly much further reaching. I would actually compare it a little with Vengeance on Varos, whilst they certainly have different themes, they both use a hieghtened Sci Fi version of a modern media really to explore something that isn't really new to society at all. This obviously kinda circles back to Bad Wolf which obviously is very similar to Vengeance on Varos however (and not in a bad way) that feels more tightly connected to it's time and therefore feels less reminiscent of Dot and Bubble at least to me. I hope any of that made sense 😅

my guess is that in the case of more insane sci fi scenarios, they would likely omit showing them with the BBC tag, since in the possibility of those being taken out of context, them having BBC brand attached to them could be seen by some as "damaging the reputation" of a public broadcaster such as BBC.

rtd's had a penchant for writing pretty literally-since i clocked it, every time i put on headphones i'm reminded of Rise of the Cybermen / Age of Steel, which probably dropped right after earpieces emerged and earpods had properly taken over headphones in popularity. now that short-form and streaming are seemingly overtaking the television, it's going to be interesting watching rtd reckon with that in real time. Dot and Bubble is similar to Rise of the Cybermen with its literalness in storyfying emergent technology. both that being on the nose, plus how the users of the dot and bubble/social media are presented as stupid and incapable (rather than victims of a complex dopamine-inducing system pioneered by tech giants for ad money), soured the episode with condescension imo. however i never got the impression rtd talked down on television watchers in series one and two. even the people adopting the trendy earpieces in Rise were represented as victims of lumic's/the cybermen's scheme, if a little silly for getting gamed like that. i guess my only conclusion for this difference is that rtd grew up in a time where tv was never new to him, it has always been a 'natural' element of culture, but short form and social media is relatively novel and is changing culture. he's out of the social media bubble (pun intended?)

Train or spill the blood? The ideas about how having blood racing through your veins brings together so many in Vampyr-fascinating historical details built into the game.

I'm very curious about what you've got to say here as someone deeply critical of Vampyr and especially it's so called "romantic subplot" which to me felt like "man meets woman, what else do you need?" Something I despise in all media. Develop it or bin it.

I generally feel similar but this just really clicked for me! There isn't much else to say besides the fact that I think they were a fitting couple whose chemistry felt genuine and built well as time went on. Maybe it's also because vampire narratives are so often paired w romance (interview w a vampire/twilight/dracula) that it just seemed to make sense in this world for me, but I'm also a hopeless romantic lol

@@milesmemoryHa way back in the day it irked it utterly. Perhaps unhelpfully, the scenes with McCullum, particularly if you turned him, drew me in far more. I couldn't help but prefer an idea of enemies to lovers over the romance with Elizabeth that absolutely bamboozled me when their romantic scenes appeared. I love a good romance, especially featuring vampires but nothing half baked or barely attempted just because "the raw ingredients" existed
