I may be biased in this as a lawyer, but I do find some appeal in the view that judges/indeed some advocates and other lawyers are the best example of practical philosophy. Yes, politics will deal with these matters too, but I feel the deliberative role of the judge has a much more distinct position in moral philosophy.

Why does anyone who writes about ethics have to at least partially write from the first person person perspective? What does Stuart Hampshire mean by that? I guess that he cannot actually be saying that the grammatical first person ("I" or "we") have to be used, as surely one can write about ethics by simply saying "thou shalt not ..." or "a good specimen of the genus rational animal/of that life form is just, couragous, wise etc.".

It appears that Dummett smokes Benson and Hedges. Perhaps the one on top is Kent, but it’s hard to tell.

❤Among the greatest honors of my life was knowing this man. A few highlights. Lifetime tenure at age 22. Parachuted into Vichy France and spent war organizing residence including the D-Day disinformation campaign. Peacemaker: Leader and lead administrator of Marshall Plan securing peace. 30 years chairing Princeton Phikosoohy program. Leftist, (think Norway, never a communist), bad ass spy and resistance leader against fascists, peace maker, scholar.

Not sure why Michael Ayers was asked to talk about Berkeley, when he seems very snooty about Berkeley's philosophy. (Which, as Popper says, has been validated in many ways by modern physics).
@donaldist73213 ай бұрын
it is remarkable that Ayer, a man who spent his entire professional life in the realm of the hypothetical, expects us to buy his defense of consequentialism. "Oh, that is not a practical moral question." Berlin, is just the perfect specimen of a philosopher. English is his 4th language and he sounds like he was born an Oxford don.

at 11:50 or 51, you can see how Magee is not at all happy that Burnyeat is saying that there is 'another group of ideas'. You see, Magee does not really want Burnyeat to start bleating on about Plato's other set of ideas....just look at the expression of pained exasperation as Magee tilts his head back and exhales through his teeth...just witness how he slaps his left thigh in despair and throws repeated small punches (though perhaps 'raps with his knuckles' is a better description) at the sofa and silently simmers with impotent ire...

Lol he's just listening intently, he clearly respects Prof. Burnyeat.

Struggled with Martha Nussbaum. She was very nervous, I think, and her presentation (on Aristotle) was not the best. Contrasted very poorly with Myles Burnyeat (on Plato), who was incredibly clear.

Why do people know or understand so little with all of the information available to us? We should be the most intelligent, the most knowledgeable with computers in all of our pockets. People would rather spend hours on TikTok than looking up words on their cellphones. I submit that religion is keeping people from true enlightenment. It’s 2024.
