Axle failure like that is pretty unbelievable. Probably 100% undetectable on a safety maintenance or RIP track inspection then one day just fails. 1 in a million. Only ever seen one axle failure in last 10 years working on cars

Two questions that wasn't asked or answered: was the alertor reset each time it went off? What was seen on the video camera inside the cab, since there are two, one facing towards the front of the engine and one towards the crew?

@@roberthoffman7559 Revised: I assume that the alerter wasn’t reset for the last couple of mileposts, although I have little idea. The onboard image recorders were both completely destroyed in the wreck and ensuing fire. The image recorder on a trailing unit, 7907, recorded the engineer bailing off last second and the entire wreck exploding shortly afterwards.

@@MrCasanova1980 I’m not trying to spread misinformation. I’m just giving an answer to the best of my knowledge. I never said the tracks had PTC installed? I try my best to be accurate, but I don’t know everything. Besides, “I’m not confident” isn’t a solid yes or a no.

@@MangoTheOne All modern Diesels have Alerters, The track at that time had PTC hardware but it wasn't operational. I was a very young conductor when this happened and knew 2 of the people who were killed, 1 was a friend who burned alive. It's a touchy subject with me so I apologize if I jumped the gun on you.. I've heard everything from sun glare to a train over running authority

@@MrCasanova1980 Understandable. It’s really tragic what happened to them, no matter what. My seeming lack of knowledge with trains means that I’ll likely mess up a couple of details with these videos here and there. Thanks for the explanation. Also, this video is pretty primitive compared to some of my newer ones, so there are probably more inconsistencies here and there.
