Since the passenger side was leaking, I'm sure the driver side was probably not far behind so I changed both while everything was apart.

I didn't see where your soft close actuator worked. Any idea how much air pressure is required to extend that plunger to activate the final lock position ? Additionally, there's 2 micro switches behind the 3 wire connector. I'll assume the one turns off the light on the door switch. Fully closed position. The other is to switchover the air direction solenoid from open to soft close. Is this correct ? A wiring diagram would be very advantageous. Thanks

If you start at timestamp 13:36 you can see that I'm simulating the trunk closing by moving the latch down, then you hear a second click which indicates that it's working. I'm just testing it there to make sure it works before I install it. I didn't look at any of the electronics as the air leak was the problem. Not sure what the air pressure is but it's probably too much for this plastic unit. I would also suggest maybe plastic welding those spots instead of using epoxy as the epoxy doesn't seem to hold up.

@MrMarco6900 Thanks for the speedy response. Just to clarify this is a pneumatic pump that supplies air pressure and not to be mistaken with a vacuum pump correct? I bought a replacement assembly that looks virtually brand new unused. The pump will activate the open feature which is the hockey puck however the larger white tank which activates the second position soft close does nothing. I presume that is because the air is not getting shifted to that tank. There's only one inlet but two outlets so obviously that is a shifting valve. The spring force on that soft close pneumatic is extreme. I'm wondering if 1 it's just not shifting or 2 the pump can't produce enough pressure. What are your thoughts ? Thanks
@vincentpribish9276

Additionally, if you look at the 3 wire connector. One is common the other two go through each micro switch. In the first lock position the first switch is closed. In the final lock position the second switch is closed. This latter one is surely to turn off the red light on the drivers door. I got to believe that first switch tell the air shift solenoid to divert air to the soft close actuator.

Vincent it sure sounds like you know a lot more about the operation than I do. The only failure mode I have seen or read about with these are the air leaks causing the PSE pump to time out. I haven't dove into anything beyond that so I wouldn't be much help.

That was the first one I did. That is about the only cylinder you can repair yourself. Just roll the window down and put a towel over the door and hang the cylinder over the door and you can work on it there. I used a standard o-ring kit from ebay and it's held up for many years now. I see on ebay they now have the original cup type oring also. If you want to send it off for repair, I would think you would need to pull the hoses off from the pump side and pull them thru to the front. I you still can't get them thru you might have to take some panels off. You can also cut the hoses and buy hose couplers from cabriohydraulics, they are pretty pricey but that is an option. You can see them in my Roll bar cylinder video. Thank you for the comments!!

You are operating the top with the switch to move it down, then it goes all the way down, then moves back up after you release the switch ? Does it move all the way back up, or a quarter of way. Go to timestamp 28:20. Do you see the little spring arm that is above the silver knob? You can buy a kit for less than a hundred bucks...that has the main seal that goes out on all 10 hydraulic cylinder...there's no need to remove or cut the lines..you can remove the plunger on each hydraulic cylinder...replace the actual gasket that failed and install the plunger into cylinder again...the key to this is removing the plunger...there's a german guy who explains how to do this..(on KZbin)....if you are going to this much trouble...go one more step...and fix the actual cylinder right in place on the car...I personally fixed 5 cylinders so far...seems like when one goes out another goes out soon after.....you must drill a small hole in the cylinder to release a clip that keeps the plunger inside assembly...must see (video)...it is always the same gasket on every hydraulic cylinder....carefull...don't scratch the plunger wall... Again see video first...it's slow and tedious....but quite doable....

Hello Marco. This is a great video! It helped me find the leak in my SL 500. It’s in the roll bar actuator. I removed it. One question. I notice you cut out the passenger lock pawl and sent that for overhaul with the actuator. Why? Is that a common fail point? And the drivers side lock pawl why did you send both? We’re they leaking?
@MrMarco6900
@MrMarco6900 5 ай бұрын
The passenger side lock paw was leaking. The driver side wasn't leaking but I did it anyway while I had everything apart. I don't know if these cylinders are a common problem. I haven't moved the roll bar in years then a week after I did actually move the roll bar, the leaks came. I think the seals dry out if you don't use them for a long time, then when you do use them they start leaking.

So since you said your toe was out of wack after installing that camber arm and still eating up your tires and that you were able to fix that situation by adjusting the toe arm.....i was wondering how do you adjust toe on these cars? Or did you end up getting adjustable toe arms also?
@MrMarco6900
@MrMarco6900 5 ай бұрын
For the rear toe, if you follow one of the lower arms inward, you'll see the adjustment bolts hiding above the exhaust pipe. You have to lower the exhaust pipe by removing the rubber exhaust hangers toward the rear. Then you can lower the exhaust enough to get to the adjustment bolts. It's been awhile but I believe you need to loosen both bolts then move the wheel to the desired position, then lock down the bolts. I did a string alignment and was able to get it pretty close, later took it to the dealer to have them do it. One of the very rare occasions I take my car to the dealer! Here is a picture of the bolts. mbworld.org/forums/sl-class-r230/826529-there-special-tool-rear-toe-adjustment.html
