Yamamoto: "What the fuck am I doing here? I just made something for Sonic Chili Dog adventures." Kikuchi: "I want everything to have weird sloops, ploops and boings at random times. It adds the drama!" Bruce: "We had 10+ people working on it, but I got all the credit. BUT BUT BUT if you want impact and actual feels, go with me."

The Kikuchi clip at the start isn't Kikuchi. It was actually Kenji Yamamoto, who also worked on the original DBZ score alongside Kikuchi with tracks like Battle Point Unlimited. It was also one of the tracks Yamamoto plagerised. So this clip actually has Yamamoto twice.

@funkybunko
@funkybunko Ай бұрын
@@cheeseisgood17 When Kai was originally being made it had an entirely new soundtrack designed to give an updated more modern feel to the show, but about halfway through the new composer Kenji Yamamoto was fired for plagiarism and had his new soundtrack replaced by songs from the original DBZ soundtrack by Shunsuke Kikuchi, but the replacement was a rush job done as quickly as possible to get the episodes back on air so they used a small selection of tracks and didn’t bother matching the replacement score to how the songs originally were in Z. Also in the case of this particular scene the song used in Z was actually an insert song composed by Yamamoto, so it couldn’t be re-used anyway.

@@funkybunko Thank you for making sense of this for me! I do remember hearing about Yamamoto being fired over his music in some of the Budokai games. Interesting how they got rid of him in the middle of developing Kai. That makes so much more sense now because I've watched through all of Kai at least a few times and one thing that always bothered me was how often they re used the same soundtrack/music for some scenes, especially during climactic moments. I did a little digging on the Internet Archive and it seems like a lot of Yamamoto's music was already finished for Kai, and some people have gone as far as re editing in his music for the entire series, along with some of Sumitomo's scores as well (which I guess must have been pulled from Super's soundtrack). Very interesting!
@funkybunko
@funkybunko Ай бұрын
@@cheeseisgood17 Actually, the Buu Saga in Kai (aka Kai The Final Chapters) had a new soundtrack composed by Sumitomo right before he started working on Super. The upload you found on archive was most likely the one I made with the official Yamamoto score for the Saiyan & Frieza Sagas, a Fan Edited Yamamoto Score for the Cell Saga and the official Sumitomo Score for the Buu Saga.
@cheeseisgood17

@@funkybunkoohhh, I see. Yea 😅 looks like one of the two uploads I came across is indeed your upload. So they officially added Yamamoto's music until the end of the Freeza arc before phasing out his score completely, then the Cell arc edit is most likely how it would have been presented I presume. I skimmed through some scenes and really enjoyed the differences! I am definitely gonna have to re watch the entirety of it now. Thanks so much for filling me in!

I like the Kikutchu score it fits that ‘’new hero” vibe pretty well I think, but I definitely like Faulconer’s score the most imo. That quick beat when it cuts to Trunks gets you anxious for what he’s about to do more than the others and when the song cuts to the next when he slices Frieza gives the biggest “Oh fuck” vibe in the show. Hate the Yamamoto score. I feel like it doesn’t fit the scene at all.

@@gespenst1329 The music is good. Something I could jam to without the anime. However, it just doesn't immerse me with what is going on. While Faulconer's nails it just right imo. 1:29 You can feel the suspense in the music here as we wait and see what happened to Trunks. 1:34 Here we get the dramatic menacing music as focus is put on Frieza The music sounds dangerous, just like him. 1:50 Here the music changes again to give that "Ha HA" feeling. When Trunks is revealed to be perfectly find and is ready to deliver the counter attack, while they're unaware. Lastly, 2:17 The music here reflects what Frieza is feeling in this exact moment, which is pure terror. Knowing he's about to get cut down. That he's done for and he knows it. In the end though, this doesn't mean I hate any of the other version. All the music is good, I just feel Faulconer's matches the feel of the scenes more. The only part from the first one that I feel could work is 1:03. The music matches the feeling of tension as we wait for the aftermath of the cut.
@gespenst1329

@@BlitzGlok I mean, you can’t take the BPU usage in episode 120 without its first half midway through the episode when Trunks actually transforms. Because both scenes were actually constructed around the portions of the track that were used (it came 9 months before after all), note all the elements that were absent in Toriyama’s manga version (like Freeza’s PTSD). Diverting to the Funimation version… if anything, the multiple split-second changes in the tracks being used as well as their non-stop nature serve to detract from the immersion rather than contribute to it. Like the editors can’t decide on what tone they want to set and try to forcefully sway it depending on which character appears on screen rather than just letting it flow. Also, the guys making the score actually disagreed with this particular approach and even some of the tracks used, with one even complaining about all the Mickey Mousing (which is what happens in this scene) going on. On the other hand, BPU can’t really be faulted since, barring edits, anime scores generally don’t do split-second cuts and flips based on who appears on screen, nor would they make use of Mickey Mousing.
