You need 150 mm of fresh topsoil sandmix for Turf to survive. You have not achieved this. That drainage is a complete joke. it's not installed correctly, nowhere near deep enough for a start. Not to mention soil contamination. This will not last as haven't you solved the problem. 🫡

You need perforated land drain pipe in a trench about 600mm deep min lined with geotextile fabric And backfilled with 20mm gravel and connected to a soakaway /drain , this will do next to fk all good tbh

Won’t the grass that grows over the French drains die quickly compared to the rest of the grass as there is only a thin level of soil and then the stones? Great effort though to you and your dad

A surprising amount of water wicks up from deeper down in dry times, that barrier is going to block that wicking action. Given the depth of the top soil, you will likely get some discoloration or worse dried grass. Regular watering will be required Lay the channels a little lower to help reduce the effect

Where did the drain go to
@martincampbell5499
@martincampbell5499 Ай бұрын
If you have the budget, hire a tiller to break up the top 3-6 inches. Add compost, sand, and top soil and tiller the area again to mix it in. Level the area. Add humic acid and then seed the areas with another layer of compost over the seeds to protect them. If there's a significant pooling of water, you can drill several vertical holes (or as many as needed) down about 12 inches with a garden auger. Pop some gravel in the bottom of the holes, 3 inches or so. They act as a mini soak away. The auger will save you the time of digging and use less material while helping to prevent the roots of the grass drying out in the summer. 😊

Is there a type of sand you'd recommend for this?
@martincampbell5499
@martincampbell5499 Ай бұрын
@clarkeysam I would google, turfsand mix for lawn drainage. That should get you started. However, don't forget the soil and compost. The sand will not hold any water or nutrition for the lawn. It will wash away straight through sand. Depending on the amount of water you're working with, 25kg of sand mixed into 100kg of soil will create a good draining soil. Adding compost will put in organic materials for good growth. I'd normally add a bag of compost to that mix.
@TrickyTree84

I think there are a couple if issues here. In hot weather youll get brown lines where the trenches are. Also compost breaks down so will be mega mega uneven. A good top soil should have been used really. Good effort tho, im sure its better than it was
@tk2097
@tk2097 Ай бұрын
Came to say the same, stones will heat up and kill the roots, it needed to be deeper.
@philgornall
@philgornall Ай бұрын
Yep - needed at least an inch of topsoil over the top. Roots need to go much further down than the height of the turf. Compost breaks down so they won’t adhere to that. Suspect that grass will die when it’s very warm over the top of the trenches as roots will be shallow. If it happens, another layer of turf on top will probably do the trick as a budget option
