You two have done me a tremendous service here. I'm the quality Manager for an electronics mfg and I've been tasked with readying our business to become ITAR compliant. I've been doing a lot of research and studying the regs, but this was tremendously insightful. Thank you very much for your expertise and time!

Did this session get cut short? I expected much more information after the first speaker. I'm hoping at some point to listen to a session that goes over various tools and software options for logging and IT management for CMMC compliance.

Security is a drain on revenue. So is getting hacked. Just ask SolarWinds or the folks at the water plant in Oldsmar, FL.
@mitchtanenbaum19144 жыл бұрын
what made anyone think that we could just buy a pile of hardware, plug it in, connect it to a global network and not do anything to secure it and that wouldn't cause any problems? Oh, right, the folks that are selling you that hardware because it is your problem, not theirs.

Great job folks! Robbie is right on with his comments
@mitchtanenbaum19144 жыл бұрын
The good news is that the Russians, Chinese, North Koreans, etc. love the fact that people complain that security is hard. The folks that sold you that computer doesn't want you to know that using that computer securely is hard because then you might not buy that computer. Remember that because those vendors spend tens or hundreds of millions lobbying Congress, software and hardware vendors have almost no liability for selling you crap and have no legal responsibility for fixing it even when they do.
@mitchtanenbaum19144 жыл бұрын
Regarding outsourcing your desktop, that is only part of the problem. First, you have to trust whoever you are outsourcing that to not to have a breach. But then you have to say that all of those third party software products that you USED TO use, you can't use them any more because they are not provided by this so called secure provider. Also, all of that OT that you need to connect to in order to run your factory - those are off limits too. Oh, by the way, your email provider. Not any more. It is a much more complex problem

We talk about SolarWinds like it is a Unicorn. Anyone remember Not Petya? This is far from a unicorn.

Regarding the cost of a SOC, internal is just not possible. NOT doing it some way is a recipe for going out of business. We offer small businesses outsourced SOC services for a few hundred dollars a month, so while no one likes to spend money, it is affordable.
@mitchtanenbaum19144 жыл бұрын
Great episode. The comment about 30% of the Solar Winds victims did not use Solar Winds appears to be true but misleading. What they actually said was that the malware that was deployed after getting in via the Solar Winds attack was actually used by the Chinese to exploit other vulnerabilities in non-Solar Winds customers' systems
