At what point in the input username etc process is it best to check for duplicates?

It depends. When you say username, are you referring to an email or a string field? Typically, for email objects, you want to make the field itself not allow duplicates unless you are not using an email as the unique identity of a user. If you're using something else as the UID, then you would add validation rules on the user input of the field.

@@chrischaleman2584 Thanks! At first I was thinking about username (first and last name strings), but it seems that using the email field to check for duplicates is the best solution.

Hello . for the life of me I have tried to get this right but its seems that on submission of the First name field then the hidden fields are displayed. It does not wait for the last name field input. I have made my code identical to your code.
