Extremely helpful videos and subsequent discussions. Many thanks. I too am considering a Husqvarna - the 430X - as a replacement for my 20-year old John Deere lawn tractor has given excellent service and have a similar problem where the lawn slopes everywhere at about 20 degrees right down to the flower beds. Think I need to ask the dealer to set up a demo with the rough terrain wheels already fitted. Our ground is soft and well-watered by Lake District rain.
@gannetripple2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The mower is still going well, five years on, with just basic maintenance from me every so often. I've used non-Husqvarna blades from Amazon without any problems. I don't feel the all-terrain kit helped very much, but our ground, here in the south east, really is very chalky and dry. The grass is thinner than it looks in the videos, so there's little for the wheels to grip. We miss the Lakes, used to spend a lot of time there when we lived near Manchester, so know just how lush the grass can be.

@gannetripple2 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. Certainly haven't come across any, almost 5 years on. Mine needed a new battery towards the end of last season, so budget for the every four years. Not cheap. Something like £200 for a Husqvarna one. £50 for a third party version but look for one with good reviews. Straightforward DIY job (look for KZbin videos) but you should replace the chassis sealing strip when reassembling (less than £10, easy job, but again check videos). I've had no other expense except blades. Decided against servicing but I do take the cover off, clean it and check it over every month or so.

*I have a relatively flat lawn that nevertheless has a number of bumps and uneven bits in it because it is a bigger, more country like lawn🌼 **allabout.wiki/Husqvarna-315X** After the set up, which went as smoothly as can be expected given how much I hate learning to work new tech toys, Husqvarna got to work and did a surprisingly quiet job of getting the mowing done. While it has gotten itself stuck a couple of times, lifting the mower out of a too low bed edge occasionally is a whole lot less labor-intensive than dealing with having the mow crew come twice a month and having to pay the resulting bill.*

@@informer91 Not really. By the time you've exhausted the battery you'll have exhausted yourself! Seriously, it'll run for a good half hour and then only take an hour or so to charge. How has it worked with rain and damp grass? That is when the skidding is severe.
@gannetripple4 жыл бұрын
We're on South Downs chalk which is very free-draining. Combine that with the slope, and the ground there is rock hard, much of the time. Rain actually helps, at least after it's dried up, by softening the soil a little and giving the mower a better chance of gripping. I must emphasise that it copes fine with a similar slope elsewhere, because there's a flat(ish) area of grass at the bottom of the slope - it happily copes with going up and down the slope, simply can't stop on it. I don't think the Rough Terrain Kit helps much unless the ground is soft enough for the teeth on the wheels to dig in. I'll just add that, three years on, the mower has performed flawlessly otherwise and required nothing but new blades and the odd clean under the cover. Last year, I ran it right up to December, then garage-stored it for three months before restarting in March.

That's very kind. Thank you. I learned more about movie making through reviewing the Automower than ever before. Three years on, it's still working perfectly, with just occasional blade changes and removal of grass clippings from under the covers. Hi...I'd be interested to know how close to the edge of the lawn/flower beds you have the boundary wire and how far you have the automower set to go past the boundary wire. Do you feel that the rough terrain kit is worth the expense?Great videos by the way, very helpful. :-)
@gannetripple4 жыл бұрын
Hello exaisle. Thanks for your comment. To your questions...the boundary wire is generally 250-300 mm from beds (a lot less than that where the grass is level with adjacent paving). I don't think there's s setting for how far the mower goes past the wire, or if there is I haven't found or altered the default. I gradually moved the wire at the bottom of the slope further away from the bed but, in the end, gave up and excluded that part of the lawn altogether. If the slope is too steep, the mower is likely to escape across the wire and either stop with an 'out of bounds' error or continue into the bed. The mower will cope with steep slopes readily enough but needs a level 'escape' area at the bottom. It seems impossible to get away with a boundary wire across a steep slope. I have a Bosch Rotak 32 Li mower (i.e. the smallest, lightest Li) for the excluded area. I use it on the edges all around the lawn too - it's great. As for the rough terrain kit, no, I don't think it's worth it unless you have fairly soft soil under the grass that the teeth on the wheels can get into for grip. Mine is hard, dry, chalky soil (the road I live on is a boundary of the the South Downs NP). I'm still loving the mower though!
@exaisle4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comprehensive reply! The setting I mentioned is in the app...under settings....installation....Drive Past Wire. I'm on the lookout for a small cordless mower for inaccessible areas and hilly slopes outside the front gate. I'll take a look at the Bosch, I think it's a good brand...
@gannetripple4 жыл бұрын
@@exaisle Yes, I imagine the Bosch would make an excellent alternative. I gather it's noisier, but that may not matter. The Husqvarna is almost inaudible from more than two or three metres. Nearing the end of its third March-November season, it's performed flawlessly, with just a few blade changes and a good clean at the end of each season. I'll certainly replace it with another, in due course. It amuses me that the cctv cameras reckon it's a car! I have to exclude the lawn from the motion detection area.

Actually, there is an easier and safer way to remove the top cover. 1. Remove it with the mower standing on his wheels. 2. Start by removing the rear end. Pull at one edge, then the other. It takes a little speed, but not much force. 3. When pushing it back on, start with the front. Give it a bit of a push, it does nit take much. No bodily fluids are wasted this way :)

You're right, the manual is very poor, as is the website. It definitely takes 2mm line. As for how to fit it, it's hard to describe in text and I don't want to video it because my trimmer head is more than half full and I really don't want to unwind it. All I can say is that I worked out how to do it without too much difficulty. I guess it's best, if not too late, to take a good look at your spool before it's completely empty.

320 and 330 are the old product numbers for the 420 and 430 so no surprise they fit. I've been reading about the wheel replacement, people have had problems with them coming off and the recommendation is to use some thread-locking fluid. T20 = Torx size 20.

I've had no problem with wheels coming off since fitting the All-Terrain Kit last year
@subwarpspeed7 жыл бұрын
Great review. I'm awaiting install of a 430X. Realized just know that they may be a part where the boundary wire should go at the bottom of a slope and it is more than 15% incline. Will wait with the terrain wheel kit because if it is not needed I might go with only the brush kit to keep the wheels clean (I don't want to buy that first and then find out I need the terrain wheels which includes the brush kit).
@davidhaverty49517 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. I think it likely that 20% would be ok, maybe even a little more. We have 30-35% but only on a very small section of our lawn and we're still delighted with our 430X. I installed a Terrain kit yesterday. it comprises wheels with longer teeth (but fewer of them) and brushes to clean them. I'm preparing a video of the installation process (hope to publish today) because it wasn't entirely straightforward. I won't be able to say how effective the kit is until I make time to move the boundary and guide wires, which won't be today.
@davidhaverty49517 жыл бұрын
Just to let you know I've posted my video of the Rough Terrain kit installation now. It was straightforward once I'd figured out how to remove the cover. The wheels are the same except for longer teeth (and fewer of them). The brushes would probably help, if the wheels got mucky, but so far that's not a problem I've had. Performance n our rock hard ground with thin grass has certainly improved and my next video will show that. I still had a couple of crashes at first but only because I was testing to see what I could get away with. Moving the boundary wire a short distance up the slope to where it's a little less steep - around 25% - seems to have done the trick. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHKwm6Wigt9khpY
