Baritone here, cannot sing this shit correctly, i can mostly sing everything in tenor octave fine, but somehow singing that high fucks me up and when the climax comes (which i cant sing in tenor octave ) i take it in baritone octave and i can barely hit the low notes since i got used to the high notes throughout the song.

Clearly number one is the most accomplished player. One thing I dislike is the exaggerated articulations - some are really staccato and pronounced. As a eupher I don’t like the nasally, straight orchestral sound so am going for the tuba.

Thank you for this interesting comparison. I went to see Turandot at Wiener Staatsoper the other week, and the sound of a Cimbasso makes a big difference in terms of fitting into the trombone section and giving a good snarl to the bass line.

Yes, this excerpt is from the "bass trombone" part for Madama Butterfly ("trombone basso"). Puccini's score for Madama Butterfly and several of his other operas call for four trombones (three trombones and one bass trombone) and no tuba. It may have been intended by Puccini in the original Italian productions as two tenor trombones, one bass trombone, and a cimbasso. Many opera orchestras have a tuba play the bass trombone part, even though it is titled "trombone basso." They usually do not have four trombones. In a Met Opera production of Madama Butterfly I saw this year, there were three trombones and a tuba in the orchestra.

It would be easier to play with a flugelhorn. Yes ok, it's not the same sound because of the harmonics. But it is much more practical to transport the instrument on your bike. All joking aside, this tuba player is exceptional.

I am a tuba player and I think the euphonium is the best choice for this solo. We are all used to hearing the thin, strained sound of the tuba's high register on this solo and the guy in the video plays it perfectly. But, the risk is high. Many tuba players have slipped here and ruined their careers and reputations (not me, fortunately). One famous professional in New York used to have it written into his contracts that he would not have to play this solo. The risk is not necessary when the solo sounds so good on the euphonium, an instrument whose range suits it much better.
@dingrobin79244 ай бұрын
I completely disagree. Bydlo is not even that difficult of a solo compare to what other brass instruments have to handle, refusing to play the most famous and prominent solo on your instrument js ridiculous. It’s like a trumpet player saying they wouldn’t play Mahler 3 post horn solo/alpine symphony/Mahler 7, a trombone player saying they wouldn’t play bolero/mahler3 or a horn player saying they wouldn’t play Dvorak9. In addition musically speaking, a “strained” sound most definitely would better represent a ox car pulling cargos in the mud. That’s what emphasizes the struggle which the ox is in.

F-tuba can play this part if good player used it. Eb- tuba maybe, CC and BBb are not useful for such passages. However Euph, baritone and French 6 valved C- euphonium are more regular historical. Ravel wrote for 6 valved C- euphonium, not for F- bass.

A slight miss from the 1st trumpet in the concert B, but that is an extremely difficult part because it is played very softly.
@v_munu5 ай бұрын
I just played this in my final college concert and indeed that high B was an absolute monster to overcome cleanly. Quiet, clean, high AND agonizingly slow; everything painful on a trumpet. Entirely worth it for one of the most beautiful brass chorales ever written.
@ekus1647Ай бұрын
To be honest, I find that slight miss to sound really good, so it doesn't really matter for me. If anything the concert A after it isn't as wide and cared for at the start but gets good after a millisecond or so.
