Whoa. I've been a "recording engineer" & shared air with a lot of other engineers over the years, & It's amazing how little some pro audio folks (including myself) know about certain fundamentals. This lesson was totally clear & shoulda been a bigger part of my curriculum. Most of this stuff I figured out or memorized in terms pf target readings, but you tied all the metering & correlated connections together beautifully. And also the mathematical relationships. Just awesome!

I try to simulate an analog workflow by putting one (neve) on every track, then tape, and only then I put another NLS SSL followed by a full channel strip and start mixing. on the mix bus some mix bus, a little EQ, limiter and back to another tape.. 😅😅

Why do you use a trash and room mix for drum mixing(Can you do without )
@AudioKnowHow
@AudioKnowHow 2 ай бұрын
@@kojoXAppau because I can 😂 I love working and experimenting with different microphones. And in my experience a so called “trash mic” a cheap microphone I generally use during recording a hyper compressed version of the kit helps with bringing forward a lot of texture when blended in parallel. Instead of only using parallel compression I can season to taste the sound of my drums bringing forward that mic. But going back to your question, sure you can do without it. It’s all about what if your sonic vision. I hope this clarifies

Thank you for in-depth explanation 🙏 The only question I have is about conversion from +4dbu to -18dbfs. I heard before that this values can’t be directly compared. The headroom is good for sure, it will save you from the mistake for the most of the time. But it’s not technically correct way to reconcile the levels. I would find the level of analog clipping and fit it to 0dbfs. In the scenarios where you don’t want any distortion in your sound it may give better representation and more dynamic range.

is there a way I can send you a drum track to have it mixed like this? I can't seem to get it sounding right., let me know thanks
@RMHendrickson
@RMHendrickson 6 ай бұрын
You always want to mix your drums in context of the song. Sending just the drums to be mixed is pointless. You could have drums that sound fantastic on their own, but get lost when brought back in with the other instruments. Mixing is all about balancing every element so that they work together.
@BlackWaterCanyon
@BlackWaterCanyon 6 ай бұрын
@@RMHendrickson well I would send in the song track in stereo with no drums and then the drum tracks separately. That’s what I was implying.
@RMHendrickson
@RMHendrickson 6 ай бұрын
@@BlackWaterCanyon That still doesn't work. You want to mix everything at the same time. Mixing them alongside a stereo track of other mixed tracks is never going to sound as good as doing it all together. My advice to you is to watch more mixing tutorial videos and practice.
