USSR FD class is what the Chinese used as a base in designing these locomotives. I find it impressive that China still runs steam in their coal mines, makes logical sense though cause coal is the fuel used to fire the steam locomotives working those areas. If Im not mistaken the locomotive featured here was built in 1982?

Fun fact: In 1964 5632 was painted gold (water based paint) commemorating the 100th anniversary of CB&Q's suburban service. It pulled 22 coaches with an estimated 3,500 people which was a record. It was painted gold a second time to commemorate the Later that year it was painted gold again to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Kansas City Union Station. CB&Q 4960 was also once painted gold in 1953 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of service to Casper, Wyoming. Trains magazine nicknamed it the "Tenshodo Mikado" due to its similarity to a brass model locomotive such as those made by Tenshodo Models.

Fun fact. In 1965 severe flooding at Svannah, IL prevent diesels from operating. CB&Q 4960 was fired up and pulled trains through the flooded area where diesels, due to their low-slung traction motors, could not operate.

1278 has a great sounding whistle! It's a shame we won't ever see it operate again thanks to poor maintenance and not a decent water treatment program, but thanks to the design of the boiler and crown sheet, the crew's lives were spared. If the whole boiler exploded, not only the crew would of been killed plus some passengers would been injured or killed from flying shrapnel from the explosion. At least 1278 still exists but it will be a forever static display unless some rail preservation society would raise multiple of millions almost to a billion to get a whole new boiler fabricated for 1278 to run and refurbish the other equipment that was in such bad shape prior to the explosion. Hey if the people in Silvis IL can get challenger 3985 running again, than hopefully someone can get Gettysburg 1278 to run again especially to hear her whistle again.
