I completely disagree with you man. I'm not sure what it is about the Silent Hill fan culture, but as a writer, I can tell you that Silent Hill 2's story was majorly flawed. For starters, without giving spoilers, the "sexual assault" backstory behind one of the characters, had nothing to do with the main protagonist Jame's story. So it's literally a useless backstory for a side character. With that said, one has to ask themselves, yes sexual assault is a plot device...But is it fun? No it's not, we're playing a game. Not a trauma call center, and this kind of plot device is overused, tasteless, and cumbersome. Next, the story itself for SH2 is gravely convoluted, it droned on forever and ever, and in the end, the endings leave zero reward. It's just depressing. I actually had to just quit the remake once I got to the prison, because everything just became way too repetitive, and simply looked up the endings on KZbin. KZbin and social media has a bad habit of creating slop, where they basically regurgitate what is the trend, but in Silent Hill 2's case, I guess since it involves mental illness, it brought out the crazies who can relate to the same thing, and they don't think clearly anyway. Silent Hill 1 and 3 are a bit better actually, and even silent hill 4 (which The room was straight trash) at least as a more digestible plot than here.
@Cr00ked_CatАй бұрын
You think the story that has major thematic ties to the objectification/sexualization of, and violence against, women is flawed because it has a character whose backstory hinges on her sexual assault at the hands of her father? There is no way you're a writer and you seriously think this. It's extremely relevant to the story it's telling in both a narrative and thematic sense, how is it "literally useless backstory" ? How is the story flawed? The only thing you listed off as a flaw is completely relevant to the overarching themes and narrative.
@NathanFrank-n9dАй бұрын
@MrReaperofDead If you are a writer you give me the vibe of Dragon age the veilguard writers. Don't put trauma in the game because it must be fun lol this is what gamers and developers nowadays get wrong about video games, the best experiences in gaming are fun yes but they make you feel a range of emotions that's why SH2 stands out. The game came out 23 years ago and tackled topics that was not discussed often the way it is today and does so brilliantly. The og tackled trauma when it wasn't as popular, and frankly does it better then most media today which wants to tell you who's right and who's wrong instead of letting the audience come to their own conclusion. Angela and Eddie only connection to James is that they too are struggling with issues and the game shows you how it effects them that's why they are brought their, it's that simple. People seem to overthink this, one of the trailers for the og game says it's a story about love, hate, pain ect and in these emotions lies the complexity of the story. It's a story about the human mind and how it can be your worse enemy, not the town and the monsters.
@philippeamon7271Ай бұрын
Silent Hill effectively plays upon men's vulnerabilities. Angela is connected to James' story: She pretends that she was chomololo, and that sex causes schizophrenia. This is how she copes with being an erratic dysfunctional, HUMILIATED, individual. How she tries to justify unaliving all of her "mama"'s. By that same token, James is wearing the manly Pussy Helmet, by pretending, "iz okay to unalife wife, because blue balls!". But we then find out, that's not entirely accurate, there was quite a bit more, and very, different to the story. The more desirable, "sugar coated" narrative, is the one you'd employ for your subversion. So male players can cope with blue balls, due to their guilt of what they'd do to her, if they could be alone with baby Angela, (you must have seen those "Angela, but hot, so iz okay to grape her" type mods), and also have a wank when the perfect sex fantasy stripper girl Weird Sciences out of thin air, so conveniently. Therefore, these are the narratives that are most likely to be false! There's no real reason to see the endings, they are all canon - you input a certain behavior through the game, you are scored and receive an ending - then you go right back to the bathroom, that informs you "Thine hands fashioned and made me, now doth turn about and destroy me!" - All endings are discarded for another game. The remake is a little overly long, yes. But stays in a mental asylum and a prison, are that kind of experience, that tends to overstay it's welcome. The fog world hotel is realistically... concise. Immediately before that lies the Labyrinth of perspectives, on the very edge of reality itself, where little of reality can be trusted, but you can rotate a box to view different angles/pahways.

@NathanFrank-n9d Yes, this game truly does express the human condition.And that's why we all love it. I personally do not think it is flawed. But we As humans definitely are.

“Boooring.” ~ Homer Simpson The game is cool, but what it does so well is a boring concept. So much so that the people in charge of the remake stated they won’t be making another game in the psych horror genre. It was a game which was initially released at the perfect time, which explains its impact and how it became the blueprint for future games of the same genre, but that status came from simply being one of the first of it’s kind. Overall, it tells a good story. As a game isn’t really all that when you think about it.
@MaskedProductions191Ай бұрын
Each to their own of course but if the concept was so boring, the remake wouldn’t be voted as 10/10 on steam lol not to mention they’re one of the most brutal communities when it comes to voting games. In our opinion, it does stand as one of the best horror games of all time. The game was brilliant, especially for its time. And yeah going back to the game being released at the perfect time, of course they did- it is business and legacy at the end of the day. The remake sold over a million copies within 4 days of release, I think it says enough. I can agree with the fact that it doesn’t tailor to everyone, psych horrors aren’t a big thing in this gen unfortunately compared to how it was before. The best horror titles in the entertainment were mostly psych horrors. The reason they probably said they’re not going to make another game in the psych horror genre is probably because of that, the fact that it doesn’t tailor much to the new age. But we do appreciate your take on this!
@TakimiRyujinАй бұрын
The concept is b o r i n g. Realistically, those reviews and sales are most likely nostalgia driven. Who wouldn’t want to see a cult classic reimagined? Especially “one of the best horror games of all time” lol. Those numbers were almost guaranteed since most remakes kinda sell themselves. As for the perfect time of release, u can’t talk about business and legacy after the fact lol. You’re speaking as if they intended to create the blueprint for, and lay the foundation for horror as they knew it at the time lol. In the early 2000s, horror was a very small genre. So the chances of success were high since the competition was small, and if they predicted that much it wouldn’t surprise me. A psych horror most definitely could be tailored to the new generation of gaming, as long as it’s done correctly. The remake didn’t think about that. It banked on it’s “legacy”, and nostalgia, which worked lol. The game makes SH2 feel like a 10 yr old game rather than 20 yr old game. It’s like a bootleg TLOU in regards to what they did with the game. Added nothing but a graphics mod and a £70 price tag lol. A good example of a psych horror game tailored to modern/new gen standards is Alan Wake 2. b o r i n g is my opinion. Steam reviews don’t mean anything. You play a game because you like it and not because randoms gave it 10/10 on steam. If I wanted a good story alone, I’d read a book or watch a movie lol. Thanks for the reply though

Who in their right mind finds time to trash on the prequels when the sequels are such a free real estate?
@MaskedProductions1912 ай бұрын
ehhh, sequels is too easy. Besides, this video is centred around the jedi republic/old republic so it makes sense to make that comparison. But like I said, not hating on the prequels, they just don't capture what the original trilogy is for many people. Also George Lucas tends to need a lot of oversight when he's making these movies, and he didn't get much for the prequels. In the original trilogy, if I'm not mistaken his wife had been involved in making the final cut of the movie which is largely why those movies are amazing to rewatch.

The best Yakuza game for me. Totally transcends game narrative and draws you in completely. But I also agree with it setting the bar so high that everything that comes after will seem like a downgrade, and not even Kiwami 1/2 can escape that. The only other 2 games that come close to it are Judgment/Lost Judgment.

I am a huge Majima fan and I don’t think Yakuza 0 would have hit at all for his storyline if I didn’t have a understanding of his crazy nature before playing it. The last scene of Majima adorning his outfit and hair had me fist pumping and yelling out loud. It was a fantastic gaming moment for me that would not have happened if I didn’t have some understanding of him first. Probably just me, but really I loved that moment.

I agree, while yakuza 0 was a starting point for me i almost immediately understood that i should’ve started from kiwamis and then moved to 3-5 then 0 and after that it’s 6-8. So pretty much release order if we ignore the fact that first two are remakes

Starting with Y0, as well as telling people to start with it, is a rookie mistake. It may not require prior knowledge of Y1~5 (release order) but it also sets up quite a number of wrong expectations for the rest of the series. If I had a dime for every Vtuber who spend half of Kiwami 1 whinning about wanting the "their" Majima back, I'd have enough money to clear out my wishlist... Other examples: general aesthetics unique to the 80s, styles are unique to Y0 and the Y1 remake, using your own equipment in fights, managing money and exp (without money-making island minigames) and combat fundamentals (ever wonder why so much Y3 complaining? enemies don't block too much, they just block in general, but rushing in blind is all kids learned to do) Now sure, starting with Kiwami 1 isn't the best answer either, that game has an inane amount of Y0 callbacks and kinda fails to capture parts of the original game's essence, but at the very least kids need a "before you play Y0"-style orientation to keep them from becoming like the aforementioned Vtubers.
@MaskedProductions1913 ай бұрын
I think it just depends on how you wanna experience the series. For example, I would never in a million years watch star wars in chronological order since in my opinon it takes away from the original trilogy when you start from the prequel(especially the first time you watch it). But lets say I watch the lord of the rings trilogy, I'd start with the hobbit movies(even though yes the books were released in chronological order to start with). I do however think Y0 is a great start point in terms of experiencing a story start to finish
@SonnyFRST3 ай бұрын
@@MaskedProductions191 Hence my adendum at the end. When it comes to "where to start" questions, people gotta start somewhere no matter how bad the options presented. Y0 is indeed the "least worst" among reasonable options (telling people to go play the PS2 Yakuza 1 is not considered reasonsable by most people) but I think the internet needs to put more effort into warning newcomers of the issues mentioned. (or at least show them some majima pics so they understand what the real majima looks like)
