Yea, being my first one, and also a 37minute jam, I was unfamiliar with whether and where I should stop the jam and explain what's happening. I kept it going and kept playing but was definitely thinking some things I'd have liked to mention. If there's a spot in that jam where you'd like more insight, let me know and I'll check it out. Thanks for watching!

Hi Josh- Maybe you answered this, but I couldn't find it in the comments. For those of us without an awesome Forshage, have you tried the Trey tones with other guitars? Just curious if you have suggestions regarding how to tweak your tones when playing with different guitars? What steps would you take based on your experience- eg. start with Amp tone tweaks > Cab. etc, or something else? I am adding a Helix soon, and as a long HD500x user, I realize tones may need to be tweaked for each guitar. So- just curious what a true master of the Helix might do if you were in our shoes? Thanks so much!!- Steve
@JoshPearson10 күн бұрын
Hey Steve, thanks for checking out the video. I've tried the patches with in-person students that I've taught lessons with. I've thought they sounded good, not too much of a difference. Main observation was my full-hollowbody is pretty low end resonant, and I like to have the low-cut up at about 125 Hz, which isn't noticeable when playing through lower volumes, but when it's pumped through a venue's big sound system, it's really boomy / muddy / eats up a lot of frequencies and even feeds back sometimes (non-musically). That occurs on the lower notes, usually the low E or A strings, for certain notes, depending on the room. I haven't had the chance to test other guitars on a venue's sound system, so yea, I would suggest tweaking the hi and low cuts on the cabs to taste. In regards to overall tweaking the Helix to get your best sounds, I highly suggest using your ears over your eyes and also dialing in your sound at loud volumes. Dialing this thing in since 2015, I've learned to continue to move the parameter to where it "sounds" best, even when it looks like it's too much or too little. Trust those ears. Also, these digital models cut a lot differently than analog when they're pushed loud. It's like they stay the same, digitally, versus how analog morphs (compresses, warms up, evolves), sort of speak... I believe. So, test your presets at loud volumes. Some specifics, I've learned over the years... start with the amp and cab, either together or separate, doesn't matter too much, but can have other reasons for doing either. Dial in that amp and cab, to the best of your ability. Test it at loud volumes, walk away, take 5minutes away and test it again, make subtle changes. The ears are very unique and they adjust to sound, quickly. So, if it's really bright at first, and you play it for 20minutes, there's a chance the ears start to perceive it as not so bright. Then when you come back after a break, your ears might perceive that initial brightness, which you may want to adjust. The type of amp model, speaker model and mic placement have big variances. Find one you like and tweak away. I love the Derailed Ingrid (trainwreck express model). The amp is important, but the speaker cabinet with mic selection, mic placement and possible cuts, is equally important. For the Anastasio23 preset, I blended two cabinets with different mics and different mic placements to get as nice of a tone... warm, round, punchy, cuts in the mix, etc... without having to use the hi or low cuts. There's a lot more to be said on the topic. Hopefully this is helpful. It's an amazing piece of equipment that can get really close, if not all the way, to the real thing. Good luck!

@@JoshPearson Incredible response Josh! Very much appreciated. I am looking at a Helix priced really well right now and am ready to make the switch. I will be buying your tones as well, and am looking forward to learning from those set ups. I appreciate the tip to walk away from a tone to truly hear it again, and test at loud volume. I love the fine tuning this tool allows and I look forward to figuring it out. I find it super useful to see how someone like yourself builds towards a sound. I've been seeing Phish since 93 and I love how his tone and effects have always shifted a little here and there (the whale was a bit rough, but that's ok). You nailed this one for sure! Great stuff Josh. I purchased your Helix preset - which effects would you choose to use for this song? Verse Chorus Bridge Solo maybe.
@JoshPearson12 күн бұрын
What up Jevon! Thanks for purchasing the preset! In the above tutorial, I'm using a clean tone with a touch of reverb. Phish's studio recording, it sounds like Trey is playing the verse with a clean tone, a touch of delay, likely some reverb on it too. Then I'd guess he hits the "More" tubescreamer when playing the chorus and bridge. For the solo, likely the "More" tubescreamer, possibly added reverb, or the slight delay, or both. For the thickest solo tone, I'd try all 4 effects on: TS Less, TS More, SupaPuss Delay Less & Hall Reverb. If it's too much, try eliminating one at a time and trying different combinations of those 4. Thanks for the support!

@@JoshPearson love the tone you’ve got here! I don’t know why I haven’t sprung for any tube screamers yet, but I’m thinking I need to. I have a few Klone-type pedals and a Browne Amp Protein (which I love)… but not sure why I never added the two tube screamers that Trey’s so famous for. Does your channel have a video step through of your cover of the lead, by any chance? Thanks for taking the time to write back! Keep on rockin!
@JoshPearson2 ай бұрын
@@SC-hb8sr I'd never heard of the Browne Amp Protein pedal, which I just looked up. That pedal looks nice! With that pedal, and/or the Klone type pedals, you should be able to get really close to the Tubescreamer sound. It's pretty wild how a lot of overdrive pedals can be eq'd to sound similarly. I think a lot of Trey's tone comes from his hands: his touch, dynamics, phrasing, etc. Him on any guitar, any overdrive pedals and any amp, would still likely sound a lot like he does with his full rig... I imagine. I don't have a tutorial on Birds of a Feather, but could do one soon. I adore that song, and love playing it live. As for step by step of how Trey is approaching the lead part on that chord progression: Cm7 | F9... I think of HOME as the Cm7 and use the C dorian mode. Dorian being the Aeolian (minor) scale with a regular 6 instead of a flatted 6, which sounds really nice when the chord progression moves from Cm7 to the F9. When I do a tutorial on it, I can explain better. Thanks again for watching and commenting!
