back around the mid 80's a friend and i bought a 12 by 6 flat deck trailer load of wore out and stuck jap bike engines, from 350's to 1000's, for $100. we got them of the guy who owned the local harley dealership. they were all junk (we knew this when we bought them). we spent 2 days completely striping them out and we saved all the fasteners that were good and whatever oddball junk we thought might be useful. we stripped all the steal out (including the cylinder sleeves) and got about $500 for the clean aluminium. they were paying big bucks for that stuff around here back then. almost a buck a pound if i remember right. watching you mess with that brought back some memories.

the way you pull the head off that motor is first you back off the cam chain tensioner, it should be between the cylinders under the carbs. next unbolt the gear from the cam, then you remove the cam through the gear, the gear will then be able come of the chain. now you should be able to remove the head. those cam chains do not use master links and they wrap around the crankshaft.

i've built some bikes (and a few cars) for myself over the years. all i have now is the shovelhead angel and me put together. that bike too will be gone within the year, but it's going to my son and he'll keep it forever, as will angel with her shovelhead. most of the custom work i've done has been for others. perhaps that has made it easier to part with the things i made for myself. plus i've thought, "if i can't take it with me into the next life, i should try not get too attached in this one." (guess you're not the only one in a ramblin' mood) anyway, best of the season to you and your household.
