I spoke to Toby for many years and he was a good friend to me at least for most of the time. I became very unwell and he then did not want to talk to me anymore which has caused me great hurt and upset but i have learned a harsh lesson in that people are not always who you think they are in life. I agree with Toby completely with what he says about social media but I do wonder whether he knows that he is in my opinion part of the very problem he talks about.This is the problem with social media- comparison with is a very well known issue in mental health. You may have for example someone who cannot afford or even dream of having lots of foreign holidays and a car and maybe they even use a foodbank because they can’t afford food. He is completely right that people who have ordinary lives like firefighters,ambulance workers and the people who helped me the mental health nurses are the people who should be looked up to because they are real role models and heroes not influencers. Unfortunately we live in a world which measures success by money ie material goods and lifestyles but I take happiness in my plants in my garden which I grow and It gives me great satisfaction to see them burst into life and colour. I plant them up myself and it gives me a great sense of achievement. My greatest achievement I think is surviving in a world which isn’t really designed for somebody like myself. It is a difficult thing to explain in words because we can never really put ourselves in someone else’s shoes. Thank you to Toby and the lady for making the video.
