My spouse's family, who I love and usually accommodate my various food sensitivities, did not make one food I could eat at the last holiday dinner. I claimed a headache and stayed in my room cuz I didn't want to ruin the day. But my superhero spouse told them later that night and they felt TERRIBLE. Now it's a family joke and they are so much more careful. I love them.

A family member has coeliacs disease. I didn't think about the gluten content of beer until after i ruined Christmas lunch for her by cooking in it. She brought her own lunch.

I grew up with a parent with celiac disease and have been tested for it aswell but the tests were never fully conclusive for some reason. I personally don't think I have it though. I still remember a time where there were barely any premade gluten free breads, dishes etc and people didn't even know what gluten was. Its really amazing how it has evolved in recent years. Not only are there a bunch of options nowadays compared to 15 years ago, but people also know what gluten is. I haven't had to educate people on it in ages, because most people in my immediate surround know by now.

Pride Enjoy bakery of Wading River, NY makes THE BEST gf/df baked goods I've ever had in my life! This is without a gram of exageration. I am a discerning home baker with multiple food allergies and I tried at least 4-5 different items from their bakery, after my aunt purchased a nice assortment for Xmas. Every item was delicious. The textures and flavors were perfect. If you're ever on Long Island, make the journey out to Wading River and treat yourself.

I find most American and Italian-American restaurants are NOT as safe for people with food allergies compared to many other restaurants such as Lebanese, Afghani, Thai, Vietnamese, Brazilian, Argentinian, Mexican, Ethiopian, and Laotian restaurants in which I've safely eaten. I find that countries whose cuisines do not revolve around dairy and gluten, generally tend to also coincidentally be less likely to cook things in ways that cause cross-contamination, and have more gf options. I always ask about their cooking methods, to confirm whether cross contamination is a risk. There is only ONE bistro-type chain by me which has a dedicated fryer for gf french fries without contamination, and offers gf buns for their sandwiches, and takes allergies seriously. It's called, Wood-and-Tap. I'm not thrilled about paying $20 for a burger and fries, but it's nice not to get sick afterwards. There is also a lovely family-owned brunch place called, Chip's, and they have separate surfaces for cooking their gf pancakes, and take food allergies seriously. I don't live nearby their locations anymore but it is a treat when I get to eat there. I live in the State of Connecticut. I cannot eat gluten, milk products, shellfish, and have low-level allergies to peanuts, sesame, salmon, and tuna. **If you have food allergies, never attempt to eat at a Crapplebee's, or most other wannabe restaurant franchises. I used to work there. It is not safe, plus, they microwave their pasta in plastic bags, their spinach-artichoke dip is microwaved in styrofoam cups and slapped on a plate, and that alone is a crime against food.

We had a girl at a restaurant say that plain rice had gluten, it dose not. At another place a salad arrived with crutons on it even after we asked for no crutons. When i sent it back to be remade she just removed the crutons. I saw that she had not remade it and demaned that she remake it. We talked to the owner when he checked us out as she said we were rude.

Thank you for being nice while informing the waitress of the truth. ( I’m actually in shock that anybody would think of such a thing, gluten is NOT alcohol). And tbh, I’m not totally sure that heat destroys all the alcohol either.

My friend that I have not seen in a while wants to eat in a certain restaurant. She is really excited about it. I called, and they don't have anything gluten free, and won't allow me to bring a snack. I'm ok with not eating, I'll just eat ahead of time, but my friend does not yet know I have Celiac Disease. So the whole thing is really uncomfortable. I don't know how she will react.
@BellezzaBellyDance5 сағат бұрын
As someone with multiple food allergies, I'm going to give you some advice. Get over yourself, firstly. You have a condition that doesn't allow you to consume gluten. If your friend is a real friend, they will not care about changing restaurants once you explain why you cannot eat there. Look for places that have multiple gf items on their menu. Try the restaurant, if you can, before your friend visits, so you know whether or not it's good food/safe to eat there. Or, you could suggest a different activity altogether, which doesn't involve food. Or, you could picnic in a park, bringing your own foods or coordinating so you both can eat gf foods together. You're going to have to strongly advocate for your own health for the rest of your life. It sucks. But the good people in your life would rather you be able to eat safely. If they give you a hard time, they aren't worth your time. 💯 @rustythegreatandpowerfulla2676

Beyond Celiac had a talk, and they think that getting glutened doesn't damage the villi (with a single exposure, like contamination in a restaurant). They think there is a general immune reaction, which explains the difference in symptoms and how sick you feel.
@27hazardous8 күн бұрын
I wouldn't worry about hearing people trying out the gluten free diet. It's not anything to get frustrated over. I think it's good exposure and awareness 😊
@GiveMeLemons8 күн бұрын
Yes and no. As she says in the video that when people try on these diets when they're not medically necessary, it warps the perception that it's just a fad so they don't take it seriously. The danger in that is carelessness from cooks who aren't careful about cross-contamination. And lack of empathy and understanding from the general public.
@rustythegreatandpowerfulla26768 күн бұрын
It makes people think that people with a serious disease is just following a fad. That leads to people doing things like spiking food with gluten, and having businesses not take your needs seriously. So yes, it is something to worry about.

People with Celiac Disease cannot have a "cheat" day or decide to take a day off the diet. It's not an option. Going out for dinner is a project - you must find a place that has gluten-free options; then, you must talk with your server and maybe the cook/chef about the food preparation and the food, itself. There are very few dedicated gluten-free restaurants, and the beer must be gluten-free, or you drink wine when you go out with friends. It's not a fad. It's a way of life until there's a cure.

It's not just the food, the plates, dishes, spoons could get cross-contaminated. Also we don't just get "an upset stomach". I will be in pain for three months and have to go to a physio to manage as some of my joints may give out. That's scary because I can unexpectedly fall or drop something (like boiling water). I may also suffer a gallbladder or kidney episode due to inflammation and end up in hospital... I dont "just" get food poisoning.

I have other food allergies besides having celiac disease and so many times I’ve heard “well my friend ____has celiac and she eats ____ so you could eat this!” Just because something is labeled gluten free doesn’t mean it’s safe for all celiacs! Corn is a major allergy for me because it’s in EVERYTHING‼️😣 I especially hate holidays with my one relative! It’s Xmas and it’s a tradition and you could have a little bit…! 😡 ok your allergic to fish so I’ll make you a deal…you eat some fish and I’ll eat one of your cookies! 🤨 yeah, thought so! Now shut up and leave me alone! 😒 Then she acts like I ruin holidays because I won’t eat something that she knows I can’t eat! 🤨 well tantrum like a 2 year old all you want but I’m not eating anything that we both know will make me sick or worse, kill me! Are you trying to kill me? My drs are aware of you doing this so if I die you will be interrogated about my death! Her “don’t be so dramatic! You’re not going to die!” 🤨 Yeah because I refuse to eat anything you make! 😒

As an African American, This is even harder to deal with in my culture, because AA people & food is a big part of our culture🥹 I weigh 96 pounds & my height is 5'3....I look like a literal nutrient deficienct CHILD🥺 I cant enjoy most of anything like dinners with my Family ( Step father has a catering company) And he cooks Extremely well, I can not enjoy his foods at events & celebrations because of my celiac disease. The rest of my life is going to be really difficult to navigate I have to carry special gluten free food with me to work & do all these extra steps to avoid gluten its not very pleasant

My late father had celiac disease. He was diagnosed in his 60's, the hardest thing for people to understand was cross contamination and the severity it can really cause. Thanks for speaking out.
@mattias994752 ай бұрын
Thank you for speaking out! Stomach issues is really just the tip of the iceberg with gluten intolerance. After inflamed guts follows a loss of the gut microbiome - it is responsible for creating all of our serotonin and plenty of other neurotransmitters! In my experience it takes the healthcare way to long to suspect a gut related issue of psychological symptoms. Please spread the information and help those suffering from brain fog and lack of hope with establishing better routines. It's hard to believe bread and pasta is the root of the existential crisis after possibly years to decades of psychotherapy and medication.
