I don't remember which episode had this discussion (might have been directly after this scene) but at one point Miles and Phoenix discussed what their lives might have been like if DL-6 never happened, and they came to the conclusion that Phoenix would be a prosecutor and Miles would be an attorney, and I think Phoenix's style of defense really reflects that. He defends, by prosecuting, directing the hand of justice to the correct target. Which makes Manfred's defeat all the sweeter because he wasn't just squashed by an attorney he dismissed as an insect, he was beaten at his own game IE: prosecuting.

I fuckin love Phoenix in this case! For the first time, he wasn't just fumbling through the case trying to come up with something, it felt like he was an actually very experienced lawyer. He kept his calm and even led on Damon into outing himself. The only time I felt like he was an experienced lawyer; this and the first trial in apollo justice. The subsequent phoenix versions in the later games just felt like he regressed back into being a newbie when playing as him.
