Did you use wd40 to loosen it? I am going to attempt to take the lock ring off of my MB ml350 and the sucker is stuck.
@rich8867
@rich8867 3 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't remember. but what I can tell you is that I know back then I didn't know this wd40 and other penetraition oils can cause some plastics to become soft and actually will act like a glue of sorts. I still use a block of wood but for plastic lubricant I use a little dish soap and water mixture in a spray bottle. hope this helps.

I have a Citroën with the same problem, I must say I've had better Tupperware boxes as far as sealing the contents inside goes, the design is flawed, ethanol warps the plastic tank and ring, that's why they leak, won't loosen and are usually impossible to retighten, Citroën's advice is to install a new tank and pump at a cost of £700 = $1200 . . .

Man most fuel pump locking ring sare made out of the same cheap hard plastic crap. I had to replace a fuel sending unit on my 2016 Honda and it look very similar to your locking ring. It's even a bitch trying to reinstall it back onto the fuel pump.

Great video, anyone with this problem would be able to discern your video shots, as it must be difficult to repair and film. Question, I have one side that is obviously bad, (rubber bushing is gone) could easily replace it in chassis, but I should probably replace the other side bushing while at it. any recommendations for pressing out bushings on a side that is still decent, in chassis? maybe a c-clamp or something else. Looked like it was fairly hard to get bushing out in you video.
@rich8867
@rich8867 6 жыл бұрын
Bill Gallagher you are correct. It is very difficult to film and repair at the same time especially since I'm not a video editing wizard like most that post on KZbin. But to answer your question about getting the one good bushing out you could just use a hack saw or cut one side of it. DON'T try to use a razor blade they tend to be very sharp and it is very difficult to cut the bushings with them. If its stuck in the vehicle and you can't separate the two pieces just use a hack saw blade it will take some time and patience but you will be able to cut the bushing. Glad I could help.

Some pointers for DIYers who attempt this. 1. You will be able to retrieve the items you drop on top of the transmission when you remove the RH tie rod. 2. For that reason replace it last. 3. Do not fret when you drop your 22mm socket on the transmission. A 7/8" will work. Actually, since the bolts are not tight, sizes that loosely fit will probably work. 4. I was unable to remove the LH tie rod end with a significant amount of beating. I decided to replace the bushings without removing the tie rods. It can be done but I surely wish that I could have removed the tie rods. 5. One of the old bushings was so worn that it fell out when I removed the bolt. I used the same concept as Rich to remove the other, but I used a giant pair of channel locks that my wife had bought me somewhat as a joke. Worked like a champ. 6. The kit you buy may have bolts with 15mm heads on them. Though they will work, DO NOT USE THEM. The bend down washers will not work with them. It is important that the washer touches or nearly touches the bolt to prevent it from turning, and it will not bend enough to work with the 15mm bolts. 7. Use the old bend down washer, the one that comes with your kit is much harder to bend. Again, thank you Rich for your trouble. I may have let the car sit for a few months longer if not for your video.
@rich8867
@rich8867 8 жыл бұрын
there is a resonance why you should use the new lock washer it's the same concept as you should never reuse a cotter pin. they will bend down far enough as long as you have the right patients with them.

I did this last week on my 2000 Intrepid. You do have to get the wheels off the ground to take any pressure off the tie rods and remove them completely to get the bushings off. I looked at the video and with my years of automotive experience all I did besides that was turn the wheel all the to the right, take off the air ducts and use a flex head ratchet on the inner bolts. I didn't have to take all that shit off this guy in the video did.
@rich8867

then reason I take all the other shot off is to make a better video so people can easily see what is being done

I originally thought I didn't have to take the strut brace off, just the intake hoses. But it makes it A LOT easier and it isn't hard to remove that extra piece in the way. Just makes sense to do it. I will say though, not to remove both inner bolts at the same time or your rack will slide and you'll have to spend half the day re-aligning the rack to match the bolt holes. Take one bolt out, rotate plate out of the way and remove the tie rod, put new bushing in, put tie rod back in and bolt it loosely and do the other side. The torque specs on those 22mm are 55 ft*lbs.

I've heard you don't need to jack up your car if you're in a fairly flat ground and with your wheels turned left towards the driver, is that true? Because I don't plan to take the hole rod off just the old bushings. Also can you make a list of the tools needed. Thanx. (99LHS OWNER)
@rich8867
@rich8867 9 жыл бұрын
I jack up the car because you need to take the downward pressure off of the tie rod end itself that will allow for easier removal but do put the jack under the pinch weld to allow the suspension to hang freely then take a hammer and tap the side of the knuckle where the tie rod end is NOT the tie rod end and it will pop right out, also I can not remember the exact tools but most importantly is a set of metric sockets 8mm to 21mm, hammer, pry bar, small flat head or small chisel, channel lock pliers.
