I remember listening to George Coleman back in the 60s. Glad he’s still tooting away. Thanks Joe for this wonderful video.

Great exercise! Approved by the Black Madonna? Anyway, I would like to try to figure this one out. I guess it’s the same thing repeated on both sides, right? Followed by a finale roll? -Greg Burrows

Great video! I don't think I've ever seen two drummers who play brushes the same way. To me, it seems to be a very personal thing which takes years or even decades to master. I started playing drums in the 60's and finally found my personal style almost accidentally while playing a gig with acoustic instruments a couple decades ago. It just "felt right", like I was allowing my soul to channel out through the brushes. Nothing was forced and the hi hats were very gently used, but not always the same way. Choosing the right heads, cymbals, brushes and technique requires so much time and the perfect combination finally comes to you. It cannot be felt. I won't describe the way I play because each drummer must find his own way with a little guidance from some seasoned players. I won't say my way is the best, but it is the best for me. Keeping an open mind while searching for the perfect sound makes it so much easier.
