I have been training in Shotokan karate for some thirty years, most with an orthodox Japanese instructor who's prime directive was that karate is not a game or a sport so we trained that way, just like the Okinawan karateka do.

I'm surprised there's not more participants. Okinawa, great Masters, Budokan. What's not to like? This was 2014. Maybe over time it grew more popular. And then along comes China virus, and the world is turned on its head.

Probably nice seminar, but 3:08 OMG someone is still training yodan uke as a block. Please stop! I doesn't work! Not in a real situation anyway, because nobody attacks like that and yodan uke is way too slow movement.

Try orthodox Japanese or Okinawan karate, they tend to do the way it was meant to be learned & taught.

Hi, can you please explain what the term Kobayashi means in the context of Okinawan karate, Shorin-ryu specifically? Is it a way of learning, a way of practicing or performing the kata, etc?

Can anyone tell me why they are practicing something in such a non functional way? don't mean it in a disrespectful way. But you don't fight like that so why practice like that?
@mcronrn6 жыл бұрын
Salibs Tennis players don’t play against robots, but in practice they have robots feed them balls - why? Boxers don’t fight against speed balls, but in training they punch them - why?
@Salibs6 жыл бұрын
There are still a difference between "air punching" vs using "pad work/speed balls etc" air punching = just swinging tennis racket in the air with no contact to anything pad work = hitting balls
@mcronrn6 жыл бұрын
You think you are seeing all of their training in this KZbin clip??
@AzriAzhari6 жыл бұрын
Even in badminton we repeatedly do various swings in the air. This is all for muscle memory. The last thing we want is thinking about the swing, not strategising against the opponent. In martial arts, it's the same. We punch and kick in the air, or rather kata, to get the muscle memory in our minds. I've students who in sparring sessions they would need to think of how to perform a simple movement. If they practised the movement properly, countlessly, in the air, with or without a partner, it would be more beneficial as the body would know how to fire the necessary muscles to perform that movement without thinking. This in turn enabling one to utilise all brain power into strategising.
@Salibs6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree to some extent. Going through swings in the air is fine but you won't do that for the entire class and not to mention some time later you need to hit the shuttlecock and you need to practice with a partner. Karate lesson majority of the time is hitting air not a lot of pad work not a lot of practicing with a partner.
