I think the abyss is a key concept in Edouard Glissant's work, but as an example : " Yet, the belly of this boat dissolves you, precipitates you into a nonworld from which you cry out. This boat is a womb, a womb abyss." Glissant, E. (1997) The Poetics of Relation.

Excellent and very informative talk on how the grindcore vocal style came to be. Fast, loud , heavy and aggressive music pushing the limits is only a piece of the style. Great to hear san francisco sludge punk innovators Flipper in his selcted music soundbites. Swans early material of course! The first Meat Puppets EP is raging wild take on thrash . Post punk skronk, just a little... Discharge,Extreme Noise Terror, Chaos UK, G.I.S.M. blended with American speed, thrash and death metal.

If magic is "the deployment of ineffective techniques to relieve anxiety; when effective ones are not available" then all human activity is a form of magic, based on the conjecture that our drives and desires all originate from a state of lack. A Natural & necessary lack brought on by maturation from infant to child, when all our survival instincts to nurse and cry and poop at will have to be repressed and replaced with technique. There's no meal that cures hunger, no single hug that cures loneliness, all technique is ineffective and any perception of effectiveness is a psychosomatic/placeboid/"magical" interpretation of relative homeostasis. What satisfies your lack will only work for people who have been socialized similarly. and memes are units of cultural information; the engineering of which is a constant part of cultural evolution. There's no such thing as a meme that doesn't affect real life. The "Social Labor" ideas of semiocapital cover that well, thanks for that. The confusion comes when people don't know they're using what they see on TV to create mnemonic devices for all their insecurities or personal interests and instead believe that they've discovered significance which they've assigned themselves. Everyone agrees that constant advertising regulates our behavior but somehow its kooky and strange to think that DIY entertainment media won't have the same effect in this era when social media takes up so much of so many modernized peoples time.

A very moving speech Staci. Much appreciated by me who felt so inspired by Barbara's work. It was in the Netherlands where I met Barbara in 1982 where she presented a show and ran an art workshop. I will never forget that experience. She certainly is one of a kind in her way of making lesbians visible on screen, and her in your face commitment to that, was stunning and important. In a world where lesbians are becoming increasingly invisible again, her portrayal of lesbian lives and love lives on.
