It is better to start with charcoal, not graphite, since graphite is more greasy.

To clarify, are you using linseed oil or soap with water to clean brushes during the painting process?

Hi! I'm wondering about leaving the brushes in the bucket full of sunflower oil. Doesn't that ruin your brushes because they're constantly bent while they sit there?

Hey Chris, you're back! It's good to see you. Several times recently, I have almost sent you an email to check-in. My studio is coming along, but it's still not finished. I also got a new job. I'll still email you soon to tell you all about it.

Thank you! ❤️ That is very helpful and inspiring. I wonder, is it even possible to ever reach some truly personal style? The one which will be joyful and inspiring in the longterm. Sometimes it seems to me, that successful artists are caged in their style. They are doomed to paint the same subjects the same way just to stay afloat. Only the best of the best dared to switch styles drastically and stayed popular, kept riding the wave. I wonder isn’t is the same as with technical mastery? There will always be space to improve your skills even further. Maybe the same is true for the style? A lifelong quest… then we just have to have fun and satisfaction along that way.

I only use linseed oil and stand oil and I've been so confused on if this applies to me. ( I also only use water mixable oils)

Thank you for your suggestions!! I just started using oils and was quite worried about the toxicity associated with using the medium. So good to know about these alternatives and will give them a shot so that i can have some peace of mind as i paint in my bedroom!

My oil painting teacher has been an artist for over 70 years. She uses cadmiums, lead white and liquin. She's 85 years old with no visible respiratory issues. But, I doubt she's ever eaten her paints nor drank her mediums.

Hey Chris, I've been spending all my money on water-soluble oils because I didn't want to get into solvents. But your oily hair-and-soap analogy is brilliant, thanks...!!! I have been racking my brain how I can use use the less expensive normal oils of which there are also much more colours available, and I think your solvent-free approach will finally make this possible for me. Thank you so much for posting this!!! 🙂🙂🙂

The lead molecule is larger than the opening in your skin so the only way to get into the body is stuff it up your nose or eat it. Cadmium molecules are also quite large in relation to your pores as well. Odorless turps still loads the air with hydrocarbons and is still not good for you. Making it orderless does not reduce the risk.
