You should watch the press conferences and the promotions for the film. The director, Woo Min ho, said he wanted Hyun bin for the role and met him a few times to convince him to play the part because he is a strong personality and knew he would play the part with all his heart. Hyun bin is very popular and respected in his native Korea and I think they would know him the best. Son Ye jin would have supported him with his decision to play this very important role and would be very proud of him, but he gained the role on his own merits and the film is breaking theatre records in South Korea and is being distributed to 117 other countries. That speaks for itself.
