Bare metal designs can be used in safety critical systems. I have worked with bare metal time triggered designs that was certified for SIL 3 / ASIL D applications. I think the the comparison between RTOS and bare metal designs contains incorrect information.

Not all applications require RTOS, if the project is small (Ex. no multi-core - no heavy communication) with no real-time requirements, then bare-metal would be more than enough and yet still achieves any ASIL level.

how hard would it be to check if my router is compatible. I checked that this is not on the supported hardware, but there are similar hardware there, with same cpu, flash capacity and switch chipset. Is is possible to use it?

Pretty much everything is supported because it’s based on Linux. Openwrt just compiles a custom Linux image.
