Amazing how breaking the world record for such a historically iconic race could have been in such a race that was such an afterthought and nobody watched. This was one of the most treasured records in Track & Field history. Imagine if nobody had showed up for Mark McGuire's 62nd home run or Ripken's 2131st game.

A record that Sebastian Coe broke three times in two years back in 1979-81, hard to believe this record still stands from 1999. What a race and finish.

I was a young man who idolised the likes of Morceli and El Guerrouj. Now we have Jacob Ingebrigtsen who has the potential to be the new greatest. But even he has a big job in his hands to beat El Guerroujs records, which are stellar. The next 2 years will be most interesting. Will Hocker prove me wrong by running a super fast time more than once !

Like Secretariat and Sham in 1973. Both came in under the previous record for the Derby. That time still holds but only the winner Secretariat gets the credit. Just like here: when running faster than the previous world record still gets you second.

I don't think anyone realizes how insane this is. El Guerrouj was around 25 at this time with 3:43:13 and then Ngeny was 20 with 3:43:40. 20 what???? Man is a baby. So insane how fast they both went

Ingebrigtsen probably, but it'll be tough. Hocker maybe... if he's not just a one race flash in the pan. The 1500m and mile records for men are super quick. Whoever beats them will be a true legend... like the horse Secretariat.

even 7 minutes per mile is not sufficient for me I take usually 8 minutes to complete a mile. this is really amazing love you Moroccan brother from the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
