Leadership with no business acumen is an ill practiced leadership if the dentist is clueless on how to run the practice smoothly. It's like saying because I own a grand piano - the leadership of how I play that piano is something I can't delegate another person to play the piano - eyes rolling....this guy's entire argument is all subjective, and I cordially disagree. I know so many dentists who don't want to do anything with office management work - why should they? It's a lot of headaches to juggle. Let the pilots fly the planes and let the guys with the MBAs run the airlines....

The office manager job has been obsolete since it's creation.. Absolutely unnecessary job that was created to make a receptionist sound more important...

We see this problem in nearly every dental office. I honestly cannot recall anyone who has worked in dental for 10-20 years that said "This has been a very rewarding career, I'm so glad I got into dentistry"... not one. Dentists are not bad people by any means but the vast majority don't understand leadership and don't think it's something they need to learn to run a successful practice. Excellent video!

This podcast helps define the difference between a leader’s role and the office manager’s. It also discusses different types of Office Managers and Business Administrators and their responsibilities in dental offices.

I'm going to save this and watch later, thank you! I was a dental assistant back in the late 70's (I know, I'm ancient!) for about 10 years. I've done a lot of different jobs since, my career path has been mostly Executive Assistant/Administrative Assistant/Receptionist. I MISS dentistry! I was so lucky when I started that my boss hired me and trained me OJT. I soon became first dental assistant with expanded duties. The downside is I never got any type of formal training or certification. I am 64 years YOUNG and want to work for several more years. I'm very social and love being around people so retiring isn't really an option for me. What are my chances of being hired for the front office? Should I get certified in anything? I can't go back to school full time, I thought maybe I could take some online courses? Any straight forward advice would really be appreciated. Thanks again for posting this...can't wait to go home and watch!

We are a financial services firm and run a totally paperless office. The main outcome of our decision to go paperless is the unexpected way it has changed how we do things and manage our day-to-day administration. It has turned us into an office of ideas where staff now use their computers as a creative problem solving tool. The only thing I find frustrating is how many people out there think they know what a paperless office is and what it is all about. Based on this false knowledge they then presume to know why they do not want a paperless office, or why it will not work, because they have somehow convince themselves they are an expert on something they have never done,r tried to think through, design, test and/or implement.
